PERSONALITY
ZAYDUL KHAYR [radhiallaahu anhu]
A Man of Insight and Forbearance
Zaydul Khayr was a man of outstanding character both in Jahiliyah and in Islam, a man famous for his chivalry and generosity, a pure gem which Islam has polished and made its many facets sparkle. His name in Jahiliyah was Zaydul Khayl (the horseman). His many qualities are praised in ancient literary books, which relate this story about him:

As for his encounter with Islam, it is related in the seerah of the Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wasallam, as follows: When news of the Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wasallam, came to Zaydul Khayl who was the chief of the tribe of Tayyi, he decided to go to Madinah to hear more about his message, and so he invited the elders among his tribesmen to accompany him. The deputation arrived at Madinah and entered the Prophet's masjid while he was giving the Khutbah. They were mesmerized by his speech and the way his companions were listening to him, apparently affected by his words. Some of Zayd's companions felt envy and jealousy when they heard the eloquent speech of the Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wasallam, and so one of them said, "I see a man who seeks to dominate the Arabs, and by Allah I will never let him possess me!" They turned away from the truth, and left. As for Zayd and the rest, they listened to the end, after which Zayd stood up and said, "O Muhammad, I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah, and that you are the Messenger of Allah." He was of the tallest and most handsome among men, and as he stood there the Prophet came near to him and asked, "Who are you?" "I am Zaydul Khayl, son of Muhalhil!" "No but you are from now on Zaydul Khayr (of the goodness), not Zaydul Khayl. Praise is due to Allah Who brought you down from your valley and mountain and opened your heart to Islam." From that day on he was known as Zaydul Khayr. All of Zayd's tribesmen who came with him embraced Islam after witnessing how he sincerely accepted it. When Zayd went back to his tribe, the Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wasallam bid him farewell and, as Zayd faded away in the distance, he said, "What a man! He could accomplish great things, if he were spared by the Madinah fever."

A plague was going around in Madinah at that time. On his way home, Zayd started to feel the sickness creeping in his body. He! Gave full rein to his horse for he wished to reach his people and call them to Islam before it was too late; but Zayd was overcome with the fever, and died before reaching his homeland. He died as pure as a white cloth, for there was no time between his Islam and his death, for him to commit a sin! (Alia Amer)

Liked things and Fear of the Evil Eye
Allah the Exalted said with respect to the story of the two men: "Why do you not, when you enter into your garded say: Mã shã'a 'allãhu lã quwwata 'illã bil-lãhi. “This is what allah has wished… there is no power and might besides Allah”. The Prophet said: "The `Ein (the [evil] eye) is true, and if there was anything that was going to beat Fate, the evil eye would have beaten it."

The Fence
There was a little boy with a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, to hammer a nail in the back fence. The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence.

Then it gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper.

The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, "You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound is still there. A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one. Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their hearts to us.

NEWS
The Mail & Guardian newspaper has once again been stopped from publishing an article.

Early this morning the Pretoria High Court stopped the paper from publishing the details of an internal report into alleged corruption, abuse of power and intimidation at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).

Ekurhuleni metro police Chief Robert McBride is expected to appear in the Pretoria regional court today.

President Thabo Mbeki yesterday met religious leaders in Pretoria. A draft bill of responsibilities aimed at South Africa's youth was suggested.

The price of electricity is set to go up. South Africa's electricity is currently the cheapest in the world. Citizens pay 28 cents per kWh. Finland, Sweden and Canada are next cheapest, at 48 cents per kWh.

Pakistan has been rocked by three suspected human bomb attacks. In the latest blast at least 18 people were killed in a masjid in northwest Pakistan.

The US is demanding that Pakistan capture fighters linked to Al Qaeda operating in its territory. They are now threatening to launch direct attacks in Pakistan’s tribal regions.

Britain's former Prime Minister Tony Blair has told Middle East mediators that the Palestinian crisis needs a two state solution.

RECIPE
FETTUCINI
Ingredients
3 Cups chicken fillet cubed - 1 tblsp sesame seeds - 1 tsp green chilles - 1 tsp Garlic - 1 tsp black pepper - 1 tsp salt - 500g fettucini boiled in salted water - 1 cup sour cream - 1 cup fresh cream.

Method
Cook chicken fillet in olive oil with seeds chilles, galic, pepper and salt until cooked
Do not allow to Dry add bolied fettucini
Fifteen mins before serving add fresh cream and sour cream
Heat through and serve.

COOKING TIP
Chop Sticky Things - Next time you need to chop sticky ingredients (dried fruit, etc.), coat a pair of kitchen shears with nonstick cooking spray and snip away.

THE SMILE
As a Delta Air Lines jet was flying over Arizona on a clear day, the copilot was providing his passengers with a running commentary about landmarks over the PA system.

"Coming up on the right, you can see the Meteor Crater, which is a major tourist attraction in northern Arizona . It was formed when a lump of nickel and iron, roughly 150 feet in diameter and weighing 300,000 tons, struck the earth at about 40,000 miles an hour, scattering white-hot debris for miles in every direction. The hole measures nearly a mile across and is 570 feet deep."

From the cabin, a passenger was heard to exclaim, "Wow! It just missed the highway!"
