No matter how freely water may be available, it should not be wasted. Even if one is at the sea-shore, one should not use more than necessary. At the same time, one should not use so little water that one has problems in washing the parts thoroughly.

THE MESSAGE
FRIENDSHIP
By ABDUL HAMEED
-------------------

Someone once said: "Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart". It is also said that a human being cannot break his or her links with people or live in total isolation because the frightful darkness of loneliness would make life very grim and uncomfortable. Such a situation would make the spirit languish in solitary confinement. If one did not have ties of friendship and love with anyone and were one to feel that there isn't a single heart in the whole world that throbs for him or her and that one can find no emotional refuge, one would be in deep anguish and the skies of one's being would become dark and gloomy. Our souls draw nourishment from the company of true friends, often acquiring virtues and merits from them, and at times becoming tainted with their vices and sins.

Has it not been said that true friendship is like sound health; the value of it is seldom known until it be lost? Each one of us has strong feelings of attachment for the way that we have chosen in life. We desire our close friends to adopt it and we try to create, through those with whom we associate, an environment for ourselves that is harmonious and pleasant. We can then say that a true friend is my nearest relation because a friendship that can come to an end, never really began. Almighty Allah Jallah Wa'ala Most Exalted and Most Merciful reminds us in verse 71 of Surah At-Tawbah: "And the believers, men and women are protecting friends of one another: They enjoin what is just, and forbid what is evil: they observe regular prayers, practice regular charity, and obey Allah and His Messenger. On them will Allah pour His Mercy: for Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise."

A person once told me that you cannot ever become true friends upon any other terms than upon the terms of equality. Accordingly, the character of one's company and the understanding of its limits is something on which our happiness profoundly depends. It is most certainly by the means of fruitful social contacts we cultivate today that our future spiritual well-being and individual independence are secured. It is therefore necessary to understand one's psychological needs in the sphere of social relations, and, on the basis of these requirements, to carefully develop and follow a programme.

Islam believes in human sanctity and clearly spells out that no human being is intrinsically or genetically superior to another human being; it rejects factional, linguistic and racial distinctions. Human beings excel one another only in piety and righteousness. When the entire social structure is raised on the basic concept of human sanctity, true friendship, mutual affection and concern develop among its members. They not only believe in their common welfare but also practice it. They do not exploit the weaknesses of others but extend them genuine sympathy. True friends do not shed crocodile tears when other people suffer; they share their sorrow and grief as far as humanly possible. They are not silent spectators of their tragic and miserable lives but are genuinely moved to drag them out of the morass of their misery and helplessness. And they do not just talk about sacrifice and charity but actually demonstrate it whenever the occasion arises.

In choosing a friend one must employ one's judgement in a manner free from emotion and try to find the criterion for assessing his or her real worth. A true friend does not manipulate you and you do not use manipulation with your friends. We all know people who have countless friends. What is their secret? The answer is that at the heart of each relationship is the friendship factor and that factor is the essential ingredient of warmth and caring. Be a good listener and refrain from offering advice or moralizing. Support and praise your friends and ignore their failures and imperfections. Building true friendships takes time. It has also been said that it takes many years to grow a true friend.

AND FOR THE KIDDIES
ALLAH EXISTS

A man went to a barbershop to have his hair and his beard cut as always. He started to have a good conversation with the barber who attended him. They talked about so many things on various subjects.

Suddenly, they touched the subject of Allah. The barber said: "Look man, I don't believe that Allah exists as you say so." "Why do you say that?" Asked the client. Well, it's so easy; you just have to go out in the street to realize that Allah does not exist. Oh, tell me, if Allah existed, would there be so many sick people? Would there be abandoned children? If Allah existed, there would be neither suffering nor pain. "I can't think of a God who permits all of these things." The client stopped for a moment thinking but he didn't want to respond so as to prevent an argument.

The barber finished his job and the client went out of the shop. Just after he left the barbershop, he saw a man in the street with a long hair and beard (it seems that it had been a long time since he had his cut and he looked so untidy). Then the client again entered the barbershop and he said to the barber: know what? Barbers do not exist."

"How come they don't exist?" asked the barber. "Well I am here and I am a barber." "No!" - The client exclaimed. "They don't exist because if they did there would be no people with long hair and beard like that man who walks in the street."

"Ah, barbers do exist, what happens is that people do not come to me." "Exactly!"- Affirmed the client. "That's the point. Allah does exist, what happens is people don't go to Him and do not look for Him that's why there's so much pain and suffering in the world."

THE DUA (PRAYER)
It is reported of the Prophet that he said: "No preoccupying concern, or sadness inflicts a servant whereupon he says: Allãhumma 'innee `abduka, wabnu `abdika, wabnu 'amatika, nasiyatee biyadika, mãdhin fiyya hukmuka, `adlun fiyya qadhã'uka, 'as'aluka bikulli 'ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, 'aw 'anzaltahu fee kitãbika, 'aw `allamtahu 'ahadan min khalqika, 'aw 'ista'tharta bihi fee `ilmil ghaybi `indaka, 'an taj`alal qur'ãna rabee`a qalbee, wa noora sadree, wa jalã'a huznee, wa thahãba hammee..

O my 'ilãh I am your bondservant, son of your bondsman, and son of your bondswoman. My forelock is in Your Hands; Your judgement is continuously being carried out upon me; Your sentence upon me is just. I ask You with every name that is Yours, with which You have named Yourself, brought down in Your book, taught to one of Your creation, or have preferred for Yourself in the hidden knowledge, with You: that You make the Qur'ãn the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, and the dispelling of my sadness, and deportation of my [preoccupying] concern. Except that Allah would dispel his concern and his sadness, and would replace it with ease and relaxation for him."

A THOUGHT
Confrontation

"To say the right thing at the right time, keep still most of the time." - John W. Roper -

Some truths are more difficult to communicate than others. We may know very well that we badly need to take a stand, clarify a long-term misunderstanding, or share a vital new insight with someone close to us. Perhaps our very self-esteem hinges on communicating this difficult to express truth. But precisely because the message is so difficult, we may not be able to deliver it right now. We may simply not be ready.

THE SMILE
The school inspector is assigned to the grade 4 class in one of the local schools. He is introduced to the class by the teacher. She says to the class: "Let's show the inspector just how clever you are by allowing him to ask you a question". The inspector reasons that normally class starts with religious instruction, so he will ask a biblical question.

He asks:"Class, who broke down the walls of Jericho ?" For a full minute there is absolute silence. The children all just stare at him blankly. Eventually, Sapphire raises his hand. The inspector excitedly points to him. Sapphire stands up and replies: "Sir, I do not know who broke down the walls of Jericho, but I can assure you it wasn't me".

Of course, the inspector is shocked by the answer and looks at the teacher for an explanation. Realizing that he is perturbed, the teacher says: "Well, I've known Sapphire since the beginning of the year, and I believe that if he says that he didn't do it, then he didn't do it. The inspector is even more shocked at this and storms down to the principal's office and tells him what happened, to which the principal replies: I don't know the boy, but I socialize every now and then with his teacher, and I believe her. If she feels that the boy is innocent, then he must be innocent".

The inspector can't believe what he is hearing… He grabs the phone on the principal's desk and in a rage dials the Minister of Education's telephone number and rattles the entire occurrence to him and asks him what he thinks of the education standard in Schools.

The Minister sighs heavily and replies: "I don't know the boy, the teacher nor the principal, but just get three quotes and have the damn wall fixed!!"
