THE MESSAGE
A TRUE FRIEND
Abdul Hamid
It has been said since ancient times that it is unpleasant to be told about one's faults and shortcomings. This is a fact. However, sympathetic advice should be given in a soft, loving and gentle tone, and someone's weak point or moral inadequacy should be pointed out in an effective manner, suggesting in a friendly way that the path selected is one that would result in misfortune and ruin. At the same time one should try to secure the companion's confidence in one's objective attitude, while being careful to deliver one's counsels privately in a manner unnoticed others. A true friend may point out someone's shortcomings in an unwise manner and his or her exhortations may produce the very opposite result, whereas advice given in a wise and skillful manner, even by someone himself or herself suffering from some moral infirmity, can prove to be very fruitful. Sayyidina Ali, may Almighty Allah's peace be upon him, makes this points in the following manner:

"Pointing out someone's shortcomings publicly is censure, not advice. At times one is betrayed by the advice of a true and trusted friend, and the advice of someone of whose betrayal one is wary may prove to be most effective."

If you want to prove a point, act cleverly and skillfully so that no one guesses what you have in mind. Use the advice of the poet who said: "Preach without anyone knowing that you are preaching." Remember, the people who have a power of clear judgement are indeed a rarity. Most of us are stubborn and prejudiced, and envy, suspicion, fear, greed, and pride cloud our reason. It is imperative that we study our own character; if we see that we are forever engaged in picking the faults of others, we must start thinking of a remedy. When we make a mistake, we would easily admit it to ourselves.

Others too, if they have the ability and skill, can, with the sweetness of their speech, grace, and charm induce us to confess our errors. In such cases, we might even congratulate ourselves for our openness and courage in confessing to our shortcomings. Someone who exhorts you is your well-wisher and benefactor. He or she foresees the consequences of your conduct, and seeks to restore what you have lost. Therefore, your welfare lies in obeying his or her counsel and any disobedience or indifference to his or her fruitful guidance will be ruinous for you. The Most Noble and Glorious Qur'an mentions the wails of regret in verse 28 of Surah Al-Furqan as uttered by a lost and sinful person on the Day of Resurrection: "Ah! woe is me! Would that I had never taken such a one for a friend."

We are asked to avoid making friends with four kinds of persons: the fool, the niggardly, the coward, and the liar. As for the fool, he or she will bring you harm despite the good intentions to do something for your benefit. As for the one who is niggardly, he or she will only grab from you without giving you anything in return. As for the coward, such a person will abandon you and flee at the smallest danger. As for the liar, you cannot trust him or her even if he or she tells the truth. Avoid making friends with worldly people, who will start looking down upon you once your wealth and means are diminished and who will be jealous of you if you become wealthier. Do not keep company with someone who remembers your vices and forgets your merits and excellence and do not befriend someone who conceals your merits and publicizes your faults.

However, a friendship founded upon wisdom and moderation would not only be free of such dangers, it would be stable and enduring. The best of your friends are those who forget your inadequacies but never forget your kindness. The generous, the loving, the noble and the wise ones are loved and admired by all. When true friends meet and take one another by the hand, Almighty Allah Rabbul Ala'meen places His hand between their hands and shakes hand with the one who has greater love for his or her friend and companion, and if they should be equal [in love], the mercy envelopes them. There are many traditions on this topic and that which has been cited will suffice.

When the members of such a community prefer collective happiness to personal happiness, when feelings of true friendship, love and affection prevail over feelings of hatred, ego and jealousy, when sentiments of sacrifice and benevolence drive out niggardliness and exploitation, when peace and contentment elbow out dissention and dissonance, we can say Alhumdoelillah Hi Rabbil Ala'meen - that our society treads the Path of Virtue and Righteousness carved out by the greatest man who walked upon this earth - Nabee Muhammad Ibn Abdullah Sallallahoo Alayhi Wasallam.

DUA (PRAYER)
The Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever enters the marketplace and says: Lã 'ilãha 'illã 'allãhu wahdahu lã shareeka lahu, lahul mulku, wa lahul hamdu, yuhyee wa yumeetu, wa huwa hayyun lã yamootu, biyadihil khayru, wa huwa 'alã kulli shay'in qadeerun There is no 'ilãh except Allah, no partner does He have; his is the Kingdom, and to Him is all Praise; He livens, and mortifies; and He is alive; never to die. In his Hand is all good, and He is well able to do everything. Allah would write for him one thousand merits, would remit from him one thousand sins, and would raise for him [his status] one thousand levels".

AND… FOR THE KIDDIES
Repentance
A person once heard a pious Muslim say that "For the last thirty years I am repenting for a sin and I don't know how Allah will deal with me regarding it?"

The listener asked: "What was your sin?"

The pious Muslim said: "I used to have a shop in the Bazaar. One day I heard that the whole Bazaar was burning so I rushed to see my shop. When I reached there I saw that except my shop all the shops were razed to the ground. I said 'Al-Hamdo lillah' (All praise to Allah); but immediately I realized my mistake. How can I call myself a Muslim when I couldn't feel the loss of my neighbours? That is why I am repenting for that lapse on my part for the last thirty years".

Method
Put coco oil and hot water into mixing bowl and stir well.
Then add castor sugar flour slightly beaten egg yolks and 2 tsps baking powder and mix well.
Beat the egg whites with ½ tsp baking powder until stiff and fold into first mixture.

Variations
For a light chocolate cake use one tblsp cocoa and substitute one tblsp cocoa with one tblsp maizena.
Or
For a plain cake substitute two tblsps cocoa with two tblsps maizena.
Or
For a coffee flavour add one tblsp Milo and two tblsps instant coffee granules to cake mixture.

Butter Icing
¼ lb butter (melted) - 1 cup icing sugar - 2 tblsp hot milk - 2 tblsp cold water

COOKING TIP
When baking a chocolate cake, don't use flour to "dust" the pan. Use cocoa instead. This way, the white flour "dust" won't cling to the sides of the cake.

A THOUGHT
The fly flaps it wings approximately 500 times per second while flying. In fact, no man-made machine could operate at such a rate, but would shatter and burn because of friction. However, neither the wings, muscles, nor the joints of the fly are harmed. Taking into account the direction and speed of the wind, it can fly in any direction without being diverted. Even with our current technology, man is very distant from producing a device with these extraordinary features and techniques of flight. Yet such an insignificant living being, which man brushes aside and pays no attention to, achieves something remarkable that man so far has been unable to achieve. Allah has given the fly all its outstanding characteristics and abilities.

THE SMILE
Tom had this problem of getting up late in the morning and was always late for work. His boss was mad at him and threatened to fire him if he didn't do something about it. So Tom went to his doctor who gave him a pill and told him to take it before he went to bed.

Tom slept well and in fact beat the alarm in the morning. He had a leisurely breakfast and drove cheerfully to work. "Boss," he said, "The pill actually worked!"

"That's all fine" said the boss. "But where were you yesterday?"
