UNDERSTANDING THE QUR’AN
SURAH AN-NAAZIAAT: 79
(Those Who Pull Out)
IN THE NAME OF ALLAH THE BENEFICENT THE MOST MERCIFUL

So when the Biggest Havoc will come [34]
on the day when man will recall what he did, [35]
and the Hell will be exposed for all who see, [36]

COMMENTARY: In the verses that follow, the horrors of the Day of Judgement are depicted. It is mentioned that on that Day, every person will be presented with his deeds. Described also are the abodes of the inmates of Paradise and Hell. Towards the end, special traits of the people of Paradise and those of Hell are portrayed by which a man can decide in this very world whether, according to the rules, his abode would be Paradise or Hell. The expression 'according to the rules' has been used because many verses and narratives indicate that there could be 'exceptions to the rules'. For example, a person might attain freedom from Hell and enter Paradise by virtue of intercession or directly through the grace of Allah. This is an exception to the rule. The general rule is the same as has been mentioned in these verses.

THE MESSAGE
(Sister in Islam)
---------------

CULTIVATING ONE'S CHARACTER
We have to constantly search our behaviour to ensure its consistency with that of the believers.

While walking in the market not so long ago, I happened to see a group of foreign Muslim sisters heading my way. Needless to say I was very happy, because it is not often that I run across other Muslim women when out and about. From the manners of giving the salams, I greeted them first. To my dismay, they all looked at me from the top of my khimar-clad head to where my Abaya (outer garment) pooled around my feet with a look of total disgust, and walked away without uttering a word in response. I was so hurt and shocked that all I could do was stand there with my mouth wide open behind my niqab.

It never ceases to amaze me how many of us claim to follow the Qur'an and Sunnah, yet our actions are in total contradiction to what we say we believe. It was part of the manners of those who lived with the Prophet, sal-lallahu alayhe wasallam, that they would constantly search their thoughts, hearts and behaviours; to make sure they were consistent with those of the believers, and to discard those things which were characteristic of the hypocrites.

For Allah says, "They say, 'We believe in Allah and in the apostle, and we obey:' but even after that, some of them turn away: they are not (really) believers." [24:47] Along with this, Allah paints for us a complete picture of the believers when He says, "Those who turn (to Allah) in repentance; that serve Him, and praise Him; that wander in devotion to the cause of Allah; that bow down and prostrate themselves (in salah); that enjoin good and forbid evil; and observe the limits set by Allah - so proclaim the good tidings to the believers." [9:112]

DUA/PRAYER
Allah's Bounties
Allah SWT said with respect to the story of the two men: "Why do you not, when you enter into your garded say: Mã shã'a 'allãhu lã quwwata 'illã bil-lãhi" 'Whatever Allah has wished, there is no power and might besides Allah.'

It is reported of the Prophet sal-lallahu alayhe wasallam that if he saw something he liked he would say 'Al-hamdu lil-lãhi 'allathee bini`matihi tatimmus-sãlihãtu, 'all praises are due to Allah, by whose blessings all goodness happens.' And if he saw something he disliked he would say, 'Al-hamdu lil-lãhi 'alã kulli hãlin. 'All praises are due to Allah in all conditions.'

AND… FOR THE KIDDIES
Sayyadina Hasan al-Basri RA once fell sick. His neighbour, an unbeliever, came to pay him a visit. "O Imam," he exclaimed, "I detect a bad smell." The Imam told him it was caused by illness, but the neighbour insisted: "That is not the odour of sickness. It is a lavatory smell. For the love of Allah, tell me what it is!" He had not noticed that sewage was leaking from his house into that of the Imam.

When the neighbour pressed him, the Imam finally said: "For some months your drain has been seeping through to our side. I tried to fix it, but without success." His neighbour asked why he had not told him before, but the venerable Imam said: "I might have offended you." The unbeliever was so impressed by this ethical refinement that he was ennobled with True Faith, for he recognized the Imam's morality as a ray of Islam.

QUOTE
Quoted from Ibraheem An-Nakha'ee: "Those who were destroyed in the past, were surely destroyed because of three bad habits: Wasting time in useless talks, excessive eating, and excessive sleeping."

THE THOUGHT
Muhammad sal-lallahu alayhe wasallam, the prince of created beings, the paragon of existing things, the mercy to the inhabitants of the world, the purest of humankind and the completion of the revolving ages, Muhammad the elect, upon whom be blessing and peace:
Intercessor, obeyed, prophet, gracious,
Bountiful, majestic, affable, marked with the seal of Allah.
What danger is there to the wall of the faithful with thee for a
buttress?
What fear of the waves of the sea has he whose pilot is Noah?
He attained exaltation by his perfection.
He disspelled darkness by his beauty.
Beauteous are all his qualities,
Benediction be on him and on his family.

THE SMILE
The Three Sons
Three sons left home, went out on their town and prospered. Getting back together, they discussed the gifts they were able to give their elderly Mother.

The first said, "I built a big house for our Mother." The second said, "I sent her a Mercedes with a driver." The third smiled and said, "I've got you both beat. You remember how Mom enjoyed reading her favourite book? And you know she can't see very well any more. I sent her a remarkable parrot that can read her book for her. It took trainers 12 years to teach him. He's one of a kind. Mama just has to name the chapter and verse, and the parrot will read it."

Soon thereafter, Mom sent out her letters of thanks: "Milton," she wrote one son, "the house you built is so huge. I live in only one room, but I have to clean the whole house."

"Gerald," she wrote to another, "I am too old to travel any more. My eyesight isn't what it used to be. I stay most of the time at home, so I rarely use the Mercedes. And the driver is so rude!"

"Dearest Donald," she wrote to her third son, "you have the good sense to know what your Mother likes. The chicken was delicious!"
