HADITH, SAYINGS/TRADITIONS OF MUHAMMAD SAW
Umm Salamah RA reported: I asked Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam, "Would I be rewarded for what I spend on Abu Salamah's sons? For I can't let them go here and there (to beg people).'' Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam replied, "Spend on them and you will be rewarded for what you spend on them". [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Commentary: Although parents spend money on their children out of their natural love for them, Allah is so Gracious that He not only rewards them for it, but He gives it in greater proportion than what they spend on other meritorious items.

THE MESSAGE
Hijab -
I am not asking for your approval
Kameelah Janan Rasheed

-----------------------------

The concern is not my oppression, but the inaccessibility of hijabi bodies and a general discomfort with those who have no problems with visible signs of cultural and religious difference', writes Kameelah Janan Rasheed in recounting her personal experience of wearing the Hijab. I have spun myself into a web of non-stop, albeit non-linear, intertextual journeys and discursive shadow boxing matches towards a coherent narrative about Hijab. I feared that in writing about Hijab that my thoughts would be so reminiscent of previous works, that my narrative would be surrendered to the museum of embalmed anachronisms and clichés.

This fear kept me running as far as my short legs could carry me away from the oppression versus liberation paradigm, and hiding in a dark corner away from self-hating confessionals about the ugliness of Islam. I am not interested in proving to anyone that I am in fact liberated or that by wearing Hijab in America I am engaging in a radical feminist act. Just as I gave up the task of proving my blackness or womanhood years ago to those who were sceptical of my 'credentials', I do not plan to spend time here validating my humanity or agency. Such a task is a distraction. Read more

DUA (PRAYER)
Whenever the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam saw a collection of clouds starting to form in the horizon he would leave work, even if he was in the middle of supplication, then he would say:
Allãhumma 'innee 'a`outhu bika min sharrihã O my 'ilãh I solicit Your protection from its evil. Then if it would rain, he would say: 'Allãhumma sayyiban hanee'an.
O my 'ilãh make it go straight to the target, and make it a means for our well-being.

PERSONALITY
Amr ibn al-Jamuh RA

Amr ibn al-Jamuh RA was one of the leading men in Yathrib in the days of Jahiliyyah. He was the chief of the Banu Salamah and was known to be one of the most generous and valiant persons in the city.

One of the privileges of the city's leaders was having an idol to himself in his house. It was hoped that this idol would bless the leader in whatever he did. He was expected to offer sacrifices to it on special occasions and seek its help at times of distress. The idol of Amr was called Manat. He had made it from the most priceless wood. He spent a great deal of time, money and attention looking after it and he annointed it with the most exquisite perfumes.

Amr was almost sixty years old when the first rays of the light of Islam began to penetrate the houses of Yathrib. House after house was introduced to the new faith at the hands of Mus'ab ibn Umayr, the first missionary sent out to Yathrib before the hijrah. It was through him that Amr's three sons: Muawwadh, Muadh and Khallad, became Muslims. One of their contemporaries was the famous Muadh ibn Jabal. Amr's wife, Hind, also accepted Islam with her three sons but Amr himself knew nothing of all this. read more

A THOUGHT
Ah! Sleep not, till ye have reached that fruit laden Tree of Life whose branches are ever shaken by the wind, and whose fruit is showered on the sleepers' heads. Fatalism is sleeping amidst highwaymen. Can a cock that crows too soon expect peace?

THE SMILE
Plane Crash

There were three passengers in a plane that was about to crash. One was the smartest man in the world, one was the President of the United States, and one was a little girl. However, there were only two parachutes.

The first man, the smartest man in the world, stood up and said, "The people who would benefit the world the most should be the ones who get the parachutes. I, being the smartest man, am one of those." With that he grabbed one and jumped out. The president looked at the little girl and said, "I've led a good long life, and you're just starting yours. You take the last parachute." And the little girl replies, "Don't worry; there is one for both of us. The smartest man in the world just took my backpack."
