PERSONALITY

Leading Ladies: who made a difference in the lives of others

RIBAH QAYSI's WIFE
---------------------
She was known for spending much of the night in prayer. In the early parts of the night she would begin to pray. She would wake her husband, but if he didn’t wake up she would pray. Sometime later she would try again, but if he failed to wake, she would pray. And again, some time later she would try again.

Sometimes she picked up straw from the ground and would say, "By Allah, I regard the worldly vanities less than this". Occasionally she would dress in a shiny dress at night and ask her husband if he wanted her company (intimacy) in bed - the times he would say no, she would resort to prayer instead.

NEWS

Five US security guards employed by the Blackwater firm have been charged over the killings of at least 14 Iraqi civilians and injuries to 20 others in a 2007 shooting in Baghdad. If convicted, the men face 10 years in prison for each manslaughter charge, plus additional sentences for other charges.

Pakistani security forces have arrested a man alleged to be the mastermind behind the Mumbai terror attacks. A further 14 people were also taken into custody after a a raid on a camp that was run by a charity.

Police are currently investigating the possibility that a right-wing group is kidnapping children and training them on farms to fight in a war against blacks. A 44-year-old man has already been taken into custody on a charge of kidnapping. Spokesperson Thembi Nkwashu says the case is "very sensitive" and cannot speak to the media about it.

A special joint Southern African Development Community and South African delegation travelled to Zimbabwe yesterday to assess the cholera situation in the country. Last week the country declared a national emergency as close to 600 people died after contracting the disease, while an estimated 12 000 more have fallen ill.

Voting in by-elections will start in Cape Town, Worcester, Grabouw, Paarl and Cederberg areas, tomorrow. It will be Congress of the People's (COPE) first test at gauging support on the ground ahead of next year's General Elections in which voters will elect both the national and provincial governments into office.

The ANC's participation in tomorrow's by-elections is still doubtful after it failed to register 12 of its candidates in time to meet the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) deadline. The ANC however says it is ready to head to the polls but is still awaiting the Electoral Court's decision in Bloemfontein on whether it can take part in the by-elections in the Cape Town and the Cederberg.

A THOUGHT

TRACKING MISSED CALLS
-------------------------
Among the marvels of modern technology is also the ability to track the missed calls which were made by our friends and foes and the likes. We do not get a good night sleep, unless we have returned the calls of those who matter. We don't let any call go unanswered as long as we know that it matters. Don't we?

But how about the calls of "hay-yaa al-as-Salaah and hay-yaa al-al Falaah" made from the neighbourhood house of our Master - the Almighty Allah? Those calls are made five times a day and many a times they all go unanswered.

We do not either respond!!! Nor do we respect these missed calls. Do they matter?

Everybody can tell, if these really matter. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but surely in the Hereafter. Let us look at ourselves. Can we afford to let these calls of the Muathin (caller to prayer) be missed, day after day, after day.

The call from our Cherisher, Sustainer and the Ultimate Master. Just think about it. The next time you hear this call, just ask yourself how good a night’s sleep can I have by missing those calls from the house of Allah.

Think about it... the answer may come from the inner heart.

THE SMILE
TIMES HAVE CHANGED
------------------------
Trying to explain to our five-year-old daughter how much computers had changed, my husband pointed to our brand-new personal computer and told her that when he was in college, a computer with the same amount of power would have been the size of a house.

Wide-eyed, our daughter asked, "How big was the mouse?"
