COMMENTARY: And they will be served with a goblet of drink blended with ginger...76:17). The word Zanjabil means 'ginger'. The Arabs loved that their drink should be mixed with ginger. Therefore, it is mentioned in the context of Paradise [so that they are served with drinks flavoured with ginger of paradisiacal quality and splendour]. Some scholars say that the only thing the blessings of Paradise and the blessings of this world share in common is their name, and they have nothing else in common. Therefore, the 'ginger' of this world cannot be equated with the 'ginger' of Paradise.

HAJ, ESSENCE

Alhamdoelillah! Barefooted and bareheaded, Muslims from every corner of the World are once again responding to the heavenly cry of verse 27 of Surah An-Naml to re-live the Divine Message and gladden the heart of Nabee Ebrahim Alayis Salaam:

"(O Ebrahim) proclaim among mankind the Hajj. They shall come unto thee on foot and every lean beast, they shall come forth from every deep ravine."

The Hujjaj are all Guests of Almighty Allah Subhanahu Wata'ala. They have all come to wash the dust of journey from their faces with the waters of Zamzam and to quench the thirst of their spirit with the etherial waters of the Hajj rituals, to seek greater strength for carrying out their Islamic obligations and responsibilities. These servants of the Glorious Creator and Sustainer in the course and process of their journeying had discarded all the accoutrements of attachment to the Doonya, not only in the Miqat of Hajj but also in the Miqat of life. They have come to assure Almighty Allah Azza Wajjal that they have not become tired of struggle. They know well that the Abu Lahab's, Abu Jahls, Fir'auns and Qarun's of this age sit in ambush to take revenge, asking each other: "Are there any Lanat, Manat and Hubal any longer in the Ka'bah? Yes, there are! And more dangerous than those stone idols, though with a new face and with a new guile.

All the Hujjaj know that the Baitullah is a place of safety, and that Hajj is an everlasting Divine Gift and an ever-flowing river at whose banks Muslims, forever, may always wash away the dusts of hardship and suffering, pollution and malaise. They can refresh themselves with this eternal provision in order to overcome these kinds of vulnerability at all times. There is no loss to the Muslim Ummah heavier than allowing the teachings and guidance of Islam, which are a vital and lasting reserve for negligence or ignorance of their religious or political leaders, and to deprive the people from their benefits. Hajj is an everlasting reserve of this kind, and it is obligatory upon all Muslims to understand it better and to employ it more fully for the good of the Islamic Ummah.

The point is that if the Hajj were held rightly and as commanded by Almighty Allah Azza Wajjal, it is capable of remedying all the major maladies and causes of failure, though not all of a sudden but gradually in the course of several long years. This is a gathering of millions of brothers and sisters from all over the world at a single place. The scene is the observance of spiritual rights performed in unison under the majestic banner of Tawhid. With refreshed memories of the early years of Islam, of the battles of Badr and Uhud, and the pilgrim's presence in Masjidun Nabawi within whose walls still reverberate the animating revelations of the Most Glorious Qur'an and the resounding cries of "Allahu Akbar". read more

Barack Obama, the US president-elect, has begun building the foundations of his administration by reportedly selecting his chief-of-staff, as people around the world continued to celebrate his election victory. Rahm Emanual, regarded among the Washington political elite as a master strategist, has accepted the key post. Emanual is seen as a tough politician with very strong links to Israel.

Venezuela's government says it will take over the country's largest gold mine, as Hugo Chavez' administration attempts to boost foreign reserves amid the global financial crisis. Mining Minister Rodolfo Sanz says the government will nationalise the Las Cristinas mine, bringing it under state control by the beginning of 2009. Las Cristinas mine, which is rich with gold, diamonds, iron and other minerals, is currently operated by Canadian firm Crystallex International Corp.

The US military says that Taliban fighters prevented civilians from fleeing clashes in southern Afghanistan, leading to the deaths of about 40 people, believed to have been attending a wedding ceremony. US and Afghan forces killed several Taliban fighters in the battle, which took place in Kandahar.

South Africa will put 51 tons of elephant ivory up for auction in Pretoria today. The sale of ivory by Southern African countries has been approved by the UN-backed Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites). It is the first time in nearly 10 years that international trade in elephant ivory has been sanctioned by Cites.

The City of Cape Town has uncovered a major syndicate responsible for stealing thousands of rands worth of petrol and has warned other large corporations to be on the lookout for similar crimes. After months of careful detective work, the city's risk management investigation officers nabbed the alleged ringleaders involved in stealing fuel master units from council vehicles and fitting these onto taxis and other private vehicles to fraudulently buy fuel at the municipality's expense.

Sauce
1 onion finely chopped - 1 green pepper seeded and sliced - 50ml sunflower oil - 2 tomatoes skinned and chopped - 200g button mushrooms sliced - 1 small green chille chopped or 5ml crushed dried red chillies - 5ml dried mixed herbs - 15ml sugar - salt to taste.

Method
1. Sauté onion and green pepper in hot oil until onion is golden.
2. Add tomatoes and simmer covered for 20 min.
3. Stir in mushrooms, chillies mixed herbs and sugar.
4. Simmer covered for a further 15 min then add salt to taste

While sauce is simmering prepare fish. Season fish lightly with salt and pepper.

1. Heat oil in a frying pan and fry fish on both sides over a low heat until lightly browned and cooked through.
2. Drain and place on a serving dish, pour sauce over and serve on a bed of white rice or mashed potatoes.

I WAS SITTING IN THE WAITING ROOM FOR MY FIRST APPOINTMENT WITH A NEW DENTIST. I NOTICED HIS DDS DIPLOMA, WHICH BORE HIS FULL NAME. SUDDENLY, I REMEMBERED A BOY WITH THE SAME NAME HAD BEEN IN MY HIGH SCHOOL CLASS SOME 40-ODD YEARS AGO. COULD HE BE THE SAME BOY WAY BACK THEN? UPON SEEING HIM, HOWEVER, I QUICKLY DISCARDED ANY SUCH THOUGHT. THIS BALDING GRAY-HAIRED MAN WAS WAY TOO OLD TO HAVE BEEN MY CLASSMATE. HMMM, ...OR COULD HE???

AFTER HE EXAMINED MY TEETH, I ASKED HIM IF HE HAD ATTENDED THE SAME HIGH SCHOOL.
"YES. YES, I DID. I'M A MUSTANG," HE GLEAMED WITH PRIDE.
