Pirates have attacked and taken control of the Saudi-owned crude carrier Sirius Star off the east coast of Africa. Fully loaded, the ship's cargo could be worth about $100 million. But the pirates would have no way of selling crude and no way to refine it in Somalia. Instead, they were likely to demand a ransom, as they have in the past.

Iraq and the US have signed a security accord requiring Washington to withdraw its forces by the end of 2011. The Status of Forces Agreement (Sofa) pact was signed on Monday by Hoshiyar Zebari, the Iraqi foreign minister, and Ryan Crocker, the US ambassador, at a ceremony in Baghdad. Under the deal, a system will be provided for Iraqi courts to try US soldiers for serious crimes committed while off-duty, but only under very tight conditions.

Mullah Omar, the elusive leader of the anti-government Taliban, appears to have rejected an offer from Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president, of protection in exchange for peace talks. A Taliban spokesman told the Reuters news agency by satellite telephone from an undisclosed location that they reject the offer of safe passage and reiterated that foreign troops had to leave before negotiations could start.

ANC president Jacob Zuma is to start his two-day visit in Limpopo today as part of his campaign trail. Zuma is expected to lead the party's door-to-door campaign at Mohlohlo outside Mokopane and Mentz outside Polokwane.
