MESSAGE

Just up the road from my home is a field, with two horses in it. From a distance, each horse looks like any other horse. But if you get a closer look you will notice something quite interesting...One of the horses is blind.

His owner has chosen not to have him put down, but has made him a safe and comfortable barn to live in. This alone is pretty amazing. If you stand nearby and listen, you will hear the sound of a bell. It is coming from a smaller horse in the field. Attached to the horse's halter is a small, copper-coloured bell. It lets the blind friend know where the other horse is, so he can follow.

As you stand and watch these two friends you'll see that the horse with the bell is always checking on the blind horse, and that the blind horse will listen for the bell and then slowly walk to where the other horse is, trusting he will not be led astray. When the horse with the bell returns to the shelter of the barn each evening, he will stop occasionally to look back, making sure that the blind friend isn't too far behind to hear the bell.

Sometimes the blind horse feels as if he will always be a failure in his owners eyes. What he doesn't realise is that his owner pays more attention to him compared to the other horse. What he doesn't realise is that if he falls his owner will shed a tear and perhaps feed him with more care. What he doesn't realise is that when the other horse dies the owner will buy a new one but when he dies the whole family will cry. If his owner saw him as a failure he wouldn't have lived pass his infancy.

Like the owners of these two horses, Allah Ta'aala does not throw us away just because we are not perfect or because we have problems or challenges. He watches over us and even brings others into our lives to help us when we are in need. Sometimes we are the blind horse, being guided by the little ringing bell of those who Allah Ta'aala places in our lives. And at other times we are the guide horse, helping others to find their way. Sometimes Allah Ta'aala brings the little bell in other forms like a journey or a specific month. The month of Muharram that we have just entered is that little bell.

Allah Ta'aala sees his beloved blind horses fall and try fall and try so in turn he brings bell after bell i.e. Hajj, Ramadaan, Muharram e.t.c. Allah Ta'aala has placed the pious Ulema as our guiding horses however his special attention always remains on the blind horse. His love, affection and sympathy is always with the blind horse. The teachers special attention is always with the weaker kids. The attention is special even though the little kid might think his teacher don't like him and only picks on him, he doesn't realise that the "picking" is actually moulding…an effort to mould that weak one into the perfect one.

Let us use this bell of Muharram and show our appreciation and remember...he who sees himself as perfect will never get that special moulding.

FIQH/PRACTICAL ASPECTS

Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam has encouraged us to spend on our families on the tenth of Muharram. Taking this into consideration, this weeks Fiqh column will be directed in that avenue.

Q. What is the Masalaa regarding the accepting of gifts?

A. It is Sunnah to accept gifts, if given purely for the sake of expressing love or attachment. However, if it is given because of ones (high) position then it will not be permissible to accept. (Shami, Vol. 5, Page 372)

Q. Can a women give a gift without the permission of her husband?

A. No, it is not permissible.

Abdullah Bin Yahya Rahmatullahu Alaihi narrates that Kaab Bin Maalik Radiyallahu Anhus wife brought some jewelllery to Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam informing Him that she intended giving it as Sadaqah. Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam said: "It is not permissible for a woman to make any decisions in her wealth, without the prior consent of her husband." Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam then asked her if she had sought permission from Kaab Bin Maalik Radiyallahu Anhu and she said that she had done so. Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam sent a person to verify this information, and he returned with the same reply that she had given. Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam thereafter accepted the jewellery. (Sunan Ibn Majah, pg 172)

Q. Is it necessary to return the favour when a gift is given?

A. No, it is not necessary to give a gift in return, however it is part of good character. We should not cause unnecessary problems by putting ourselves in debt or using "the grocery money" in order to return the favour.

Abdullah Bin Umar Radiyallahu Anhu narrates that Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam said: "If somebody gives you a gift, you should replace it with another." (Majma, Vol. 4, pg 152)

N.B. The above mentioned Hadeeth is an encouragement and not a command

THE SMILE

EVER WONDER...

Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin?
Why women can't put on mascara with their mouth closed?
Why you don't ever see the headline "Fortune-teller Wins Lottery"?
Why "abbreviated" is such a long word?
Why doctors call what they do "practice"?
Why you have to click on "Start" to stop Windows 98?
Why lemon juice is made with artificial flavour, while dishwashing liquid is made with real lemons?
Why the man who invests all your money is called a broker?
