Abu Qataadah Radiyallahu Anhu narrates: Verily a man came to Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam and asked "How do you fast?". Nabi Sallallahun Alaihi Wa Sallam got angry at this question (Commentators of Hadeeth say that His anger was due to disrespect. Since the man enquired about the method of fasting the correct question should have been "How do I fast?").

When Umar Radiyallahu Anhu seen the anger of Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam, he said: "I am pleased with Allah Ta'aala as my Rabb and Islam as my religion and Muhammed as my leader. We seek protection in Allah from His anger and the anger of His Rasool". Umar Radiyallahu Anhu repeated this statement until the anger of Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam subsided.

Umar Radiyallahu Anhu then asked: "O Messenger of Allah, what is the condition of that person who fasts the entire year?" Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam replied "He neither fasted nor did he make Iftaar." (This statement is indicating that such an act is not preferable. The reason for this is that it will be against Sunnah and if you fast the entire year then it would mean you fasted the days in which fasting is prohibited.)

Umar Radiyallahu Anhu then asked: "What is the condition of that person who adopts the method of fasting for two days then missing one day then fasting the next two days then missing one day?" Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam replied: "Can anyone manage that?" (This is such a question to which an answer is not expected. The question indicated to that particular method being very difficult.)

Umar Radiyallahu Anhu then asked: "What is the condition of that person who adopts the method of fasting for one day then missing one day then fasting one day then missing one day?" Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam replied: "That was the method of Dawood Alaihi Salaam."

Umar Radiyallahu Anhu then asked: "What is the condition of that person who adopts the method of fasting one day then missing two days then fasting one day then missing two days?" Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam replied: "I hope that I am given the strength to adopt such a method." He then said: " Three days from every month and the entire month of Ramadaan, this is fasting for the entire year. I have hope that Allah Ta'aala will forgive one years past sins and one years future sins by fasting on the day of Arafaat and I have hope that Allah Ta'aala will forgive one years past sins by fasting on the day of Aashura" (Muslim, Mishkaat pg. 179)

Taking this statement along with a persons health and strength into consideration, this is the best way to fast i.e. Ramadaan, three days a month, the major days i.e. Arafaat, Aashura e.t.c., however it does not mean that all other methods are prohibited. The rewards are similar but the difference between the two days is that Arafaat is from the Shariat of Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam and Aashura is from the Shariat of Musa Alaihi Salaam. The day of Aashura will fall on this Thursday (16/12/2010). It is advised to fast two days i.e. either Wednesday and Thursday or Thursday and Friday.

Three sons left home, went out on their own and prospered. Getting back together, they discussed the gifts they were able to give their elderly mother. The first said, "I built a big house for our mother." The second said, "I sent her a Mercedes with a driver." The third smiled and said, "I've got you both beat. You remember how mom enjoyed reading her novel? And you know she can't see very well. So I sent her a remarkable parrot that recites the entire novel. It took the author in the industry 12 years to teach him. He's one of a kind. Mama just has to name the chapter and page, and the parrot recites it."

Soon thereafter, mom sent out her letters of thanks: "Milton," she wrote one son, "The house you built is so huge. I live in only one room, but I have to clean the whole house."
"Gerald," she wrote to another, "I am too old to travel. I stay most of the time at home, so I rarely use the Mercedes. And the driver is so rude!"
"Dearest Donald," she wrote to her third son, "You have the good sense to know what your mother likes. The chicken was delicious."
