MESSAGE

Allah Ta'aala has once again favoured our country with the opportunity to host an Ijtimaa. We should never regard this as small as many Islamic countries in the world are not allowed to host such gatherings. Allah Ta'aala mentions in the Quraan that when his bounties are appreciated they will increase but when it is neglected then keep in mind that his punishment is most severe. The simplest and logical way to show our appreciation is to take part in the Ijtimaa.

The literal meaning of Ijtimaa is "to come together." Keep in mind that it does not simply mean that we should meet at the Ijtimaa and walk around whilst shopping at the market area. What is required from us at the Ijtimaa is to unite and sit in the talks of Deen. Such talks that will encourage us to be better people. It also gives us an opportunity to ponder over and speak of the greatness of Allah with the intention of benefiting ourselves. Many people fall into a misconception by regarding the 'speakers' as preachers. The argument comes up that these people are always telling others what to do but they themselves are never practicing. Have you ever seen a "preacher" preach for years without eventually changing the direction of his life?

Let me explain to you how a "preachers" life will change after "preaching" to others...

There was once a man who after spending his entire life in the farm decided to see how the city looks. As he walked in the city center, a barber shop towards the corner of the street got his attention. In amazement for an entire hour he just watched the man cut hair. His cousin who was born and bred in the city noticed an astonished look on his face and asked the reason for such astonishment. The farm boy was marveled at the thought that whilst the entire city is chasing after money, this man takes out his time and helps others by cutting their hair. The city boy then explained that the barber is also after money. It looks as if he is just helping people but in reality there is a great financial benefit for him. He explained that if you want your hair to be cut you have to pay a certain amount so if three people cut their hair, each customer will have one benefit however the barber will have three benefits.

In the same way, it looks as if the "preacher" is going around and telling others what to do, but in reality there is a great spiritual benefit for him. Everytime he speaks to someone his own heart gets affected. So if he speaks to five people, the five might benefit or might not benefit but the speaker would have benefited five times.

This "preaching" is called Dawat. Let us also understand that the Ijtimaa itself is not the main objective. The main object is for a person to strengthen his Imaan and get ready to spend more time in the path of Allah by attending the various programmes that will take place at the Ijtimaa.

Method
Toss all ingredients together and mix with mayonnaise. Serve as a main meal or as a side dish to a roast/braai.

TIPS

Here are a few hints as to how we can utilize our time during the Ijtimaa:

For males:

* Sit in the talks of Deen.
* Socialise with others by giving Dawat. Dawat does not necessarily mean to go full force and give a lengthy Bayaan but a simple conversation regarding the greatness of Allah will also qualify as Dawat. E.g. "The weather is very nice today. This is a bounty from Allah."
* Engage in Nafl Ibaadat. i.e Duaa, Salaah, Zikr, Quraan Tilaawat etc.
* Try to stay away from sin and experience its pure feeling. This is a perfect opportunity to do so.
* If we are not currently performing Fardh Salaah, perform all five Salaahs and experience the beautiful feeling of being spiritually uplifted.
* We can visit the Ijtimaa site a fews days before it commences and lend a hand of assistance.
* Likewise after the Ijtimaa we can stay a little longer and assist in rolling up the carpets and cleaning the venue etc.

For females:

* Make Duaa for the success for the Ijtimaa.
* Encourage the Mahram males in the family to attend the Ijtimaa.
* Encourage female friends to encourage their male relatives.
* Allow your Husband, son etc. to spend time at the Ijtimaa. Whatever reward he will attain, you will definitely have a share in it.
* Likewise if they decide to spend more time in the path of Allah try as much as possible not to become an obstacle in their path.
* If there is a need for meals during the Ijtimaa or for Jamaats coming to your area after the Ijtimaa make a little sacrifice and honour the guests of Allah.
* Dawat is not only confined to the masjid or the Ijtimaa. Females can also speak amongst each other about the greatness of Allah Ta'alla.
