A Dialogue between a Scholar and an Alcoholic

Alcoholic: Do you think I am doing wrong by eating a date?
Scholar: No.
Alcoholic: And if I ate with it some grass?
Scholar: There is nothing wrong with that.
Alcoholic: And if I were to wash them down with water?
Scholar: Drink and enjoy.
Alcoholic: Since all of that is permissible, then why do you forbid us from alcohol, which consists of the above-mentioned ingredients?
Scholar: If I poured water on top of you, would that hurt you?
Alcoholic: No it would not.
Scholar: And if I were to sprinkle some dirt in that, would you be hurt?
Alcoholic: That would not harm me.
Scholar: But if I were to mix it water and dirt together and trough a process make a large brick from those two elements, and then were I to throw that large brick at you, would you be hurt?
Alcoholic: That would kill me!
Scholar: The same goes for Alcohol.

'O you who believe, Intoxicants, and Gambling, and the altars of Idols, and the Games of chance are Abominations of Shaytaan; you shall avoid them, that you may succeed.' (Quran Surah 'Maai'dah' 5:90)

It was reported by Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), that Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam said: "Allah's curse falls on ten groups of people who deal with alcohol.(1) The one who distills it, (2) the one for whom it has been distilled, (3) the one who drinks it, (4) the one who transports it, (5) the one to who it has been brought, (6) the one who serves it, (7) the one who sells it, (8) the one who utilizes money from it, (9) the one who buys it and (10) the one who buys it for someone else." (Sunan Ibn-I-Majah Volume #3, Book of Intoxicants, Chapter 30 Hadith # 3380)

THE KHUFF (LEATHER SOCK)

Q. What is a Khuff?
A. A Khuff is a type of sock which was worn at times by Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam. When one is wearing the sock, one does not have to wash his feet but rather pass his fingers (Masah) over the sock.

Q. What is the method of its usage?
A. Before wearing the sock, it is necessary to be in the state of Wudhu. Thereafter if ones Wudhu breaks (Whilst the sock is being worn), he/she will make Masah over the sock instead of washing the feet.

Q. How long can one make Masah over his/her sock?
A. The duration for a Musaafir (A traveller in the eyes of Shariah) is three complete days and for a person at home is one complete day (24 hours). Your time will only start once Wudhu is broken.

Scenerio: If Zaid wears the sock on Monday at 10:00am and breaks his Wudhu 4 hours later i.e. 2:00pm, then Zaid’s 24 hours will start at 2:00pm and his time limit for making Masah will elapse on Tuesday at 2:00pm. From 10:00am to 2:00pm, Zaid can remove his sock and wear it repeatedly. It will not have an effect for the initial Wudhu is not yet broken so technically the rulings have not come into play as yet. It is as if though he is wearing a regular sock. However at 2:00pm Zaid broke his Wudhu and now the rules come into play and his 24 hours starts. If Zaid makes Wudhu at 4:00pm, he simply will pass a wet hand over the front portion of the sock instead of washing the feet provided that the sock was not removed from 2:00pm. In this way, Zaid will be allowed to make Masah for a duration of 24 hours i.e. until Tuesday 2:00pm provided that the sock is not removed. If the sock is removed, the rulings will fall and the process will have to be initiated again. If Zaid is a Musaafir, the same rules will apply, except that the time limit will be 72 hours instead of 24.

Q. Explain the method of Masah?
A. One will simply pass a wet hand over the front portion of his feet starting from the tips of the toes going upwards. The fingers should be applied, not the palm. One should not use a hand that is already wet due to washing other limbs. The hand should be put under the tap and made wet especially for this act.

Q. Besides those factors that break Wudhu, is there any other factors that will cause the Masah on the sock to break?
A. If the zip on the sock is open to such an extent that the ankle is exposed. If the sock is removed until the heel is exposed. If the sock has a hole through which three small toes can fit or numerous small holes which when combined equals to that amount. The above instances will break the rulings of the sock.

Q. Does the sock have to be leather?
A. No, it is not necessary for the sock to be leather. If a sock has the following qualities, it can be used for Masah…

CONDITIONS FOR MASAH

1) The socks must be strong enough to enable walking in them on roads for approximately three miles without the socks tearing.
2) The socks should remain in position (covering the foreleg) without being tied. They should not slip. Socks which have elastic sewn into them (to keep them in position) will be regarded as being tied.
3) Water must not be able to seep through.
4) The socks must not be transparent or even semi-transparent.

If any one of the four conditions is lacking, Masah on such socks will not be permissible. A Khuff on which Masah is made is generally made of leather. The type of socks - woollen, nylon etc generally worn nowadays are not classified as A "Khuff". It is, therefore, not permissible to make Masah on them. If socks are made of a material other than leather and the afore-mentioned four requirements are met, Masah will be permissible on them.

HANDY HINT

* Smelly Clothes after being left in the Washing Machine. If you leave the clothes in the washer for a day or more, especially in warm weather, they will smell bad. Rewashing with 1/2 cup of ammonia gets the smell out better than laundry detergent does.

THE SMILE (True stories)

With technology reaching amazing heights, we still ask the question...are we going forward or backward....

* (07-06-11) Polokwane - A 70-year-old Limpopo woman was told her dead parents would need to accompany her to the home affairs department to prove her origins before it would issue her with an identity document, the DA said. "As a result of this absurd insistence from officials; Mama Paulinah has never voted since the dawn of democracy, she is unable to receive her old age grant and stays in a shack when all her neighbours have RDP houses", said Democratic Alliance Limpopo leader Desiree van der Walt. Paulinah Ragatji lives in Ga-Makgoba, near Polokwane, and looks after four grandchildren, two of them orphans. Her parents died many years ago, Van der Walt said in a statement. "To put it in context, she has been denied all the rights and benefits which accrue to all of us as South African citizens," she said. Home affairs spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said he was not aware of the incident. If it were true, it was "despicable and unimaginable" to expect a 70-year old woman to produce her parents to ensure that she got an identity document, he said. "The department will have to investigate and ensure that this woman's dignity is reinstalled as soon as possible."

* (06-06-11) Some toilets are off-limits and reserved for the privileged. If you break that rule, then you could receive a harsh punishment for your actions, which is what happened to one police officer in Zimbabwe. During the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair, Detective Sergeant Alois Mabhunu took a quick break in a portable toilet, but he was unaware that the toilet was reserved for Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and his daughter, according to the London Guardian. Mabhunu was held in custody for nearly three weeks following the incident. The officer was sentenced to prison for 10 days by an internal police court and will be demoted after a punitive examination. Mabhunu and his family are now appealing for his release to police commissioner Augustine Chihuri.
BBC News reports that the nation’s human rights experts and lawyers said that there is no law from disallowing individuals from using the president’s toilet. Therefore, it wouldn’t be possible to prosecute someone over such an issue. However, the 87-year-old leader has become increasingly paranoid in recent years about his personal security. For years, Mugabe has been surrounded by security guards in plain clothes and uniformed police officers.
