FIQH

SALAAH TIMES

Q. Outline the beginning and ending times of the five daily Salaah?
A. The time for Fajr begins at Subha Sadiq (Early dawn) and ends a little while before sunrise. Subha Sadiq is the time that Sehri ends. Even though the time of Sehri only becomes common at the time of Ramadaan, it does run throughout the year. According to todays Salaah times, Fajr in Johannesburg will be from 5:32am until about 6:50am.

The time for Zuhr starts after Zawaal upto the time that the shadow of an object becomes twice its length. Zawaal is the time when the sun has reached its peak. It is one of the Makrooh (disliked) times for Salaah. It is advisable to refrain from Salaah for about five minutes. The actual term in Arabic for Zawaal is "Istiwa Shams". According to todays Salaah times, Zuhr in Johannesburg will be from about 12:15pm until 3:49pm. At precisely 3:49pm in Johannesburg, the shadow of any object under the sun will be twice its length.

When Zuhr ends, the time for Asr sets in and Asr ends a little before sunset. To delay the Asr Salaah until the colour of the sun has turned pale (yellow) is Makruh (Disliked). According to todays Salaah times, Asr in Johannesburg will be from 3:49pm until about 5:10pm. If one has not performed Asr till about 5:10pm today, he/she can still perform asr however it is disliked and should not be made a habit.

The time for Maghrib sets in a few minutes after Sunset and ends at the time when the redness fades on the horizon. i.e. about 1 hour 20 minutes later. According to todays Salaah times, Maghrib in Johannesburg will be from 5:28pm till 6:47pm.

The time for esha starts after the redness of the horizon disappears (When the time of Maghrib ends) and ends at the time of Subha Sadiq (When the time for Fajr starts).

Q. What are the Makruh (Disliked) times to perform Salaah?
A. There are three Makruh times. 1) At the time of Sunrise i.e. about five minutes after Fajr ends. 2) When the sun is at its peak i.e. about five minutes before the time of Zuhr starts. 3) At the time of sunset i.e. about five minutes before the time of Maghrib starts. The time before sunset (From 5:10pm to 5:24pm in todays example) is also a Makruh time however if one has not performed his/her Asr Salaah, it could be performed during this time but it should not be made a habit. On the other hand, Salaah cannot be performed at all during the three above mentioned times.

Handy Hint: The time from Subha Sadiq till sunrise (time of Fajr) and the time from Sunset till the redness fades on the horizon (time of Maghrib) is both about 1 hour 20 mins.

N.B. These rulings are for the Hanafi Mazhab only.

THE SMILE

Advertising Effectiveness:

Ever opened a newspaper, seen an advert and thought to yourself...."Why do they bother"?...

* The first time a person looks at an ad, he doesn't see it.
* The second time, he doesn't notice it.
* The third time, he is conscious of its existence.
* The fourth time, he faintly remembers having seen it before.
* The fifth time, he actually reads the ad.
* The sixth time, he turns up his nose at it.
* The seventh time, he reads it through and says, "Oh brother!"
* The eighth time, he says, "Here's that confounded thing again!"
* The ninth time, he wonders if it amounts to anything.
* The tenth time, he asks his neighbor if he has tried it.
* The eleventh time, he wonders how the advertiser makes it pay.
* The twelfth time, he thinks it must be a good thing.
* The thirteenth time, he thinks perhaps it might be worth something.
* The fourteenth time, he remembers that he's wanted such a thing for a long time.
* The fifteenth time, he is tantalized because he cannot afford to buy it.
* The sixteenth time, he thinks he will buy it some day.
* The seventeenth time, he makes a memorandum about it.
* The eighteenth time, he swears at his poverty.
* The nineteenth time, he counts his money carefully.
* The twentieth time he sees the ad, he buys what it is offering.

I think today's "smile" could be classified as a true story....What do you think?
