PERSONALITY

Women companions of Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam: Hamnah bint Jahsh Radiyallahu Anha: Woman of exceptional devotion

Hamnah Radiyallahu anha belonged to a Makkan family with many members who were among the early companions of Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam. Her mother was Umaymah bint Abd Al-Muttalib, Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam's aunt, and her sister Zaynab Radiyallahu Anha was his wife whom he married by Allah Ta'aala's order.

Hamnah Radiyallahu Anha was married to Mus'ab ibn Umair Radiyallahu Anhu, one of the most devoted companions of Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam. His mother, Khunas bint Malik, was rich and she gave him a luxurious life.

Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam commented on this long after prophethood, when He said: "I never saw in Makkah anyone who was better looking, or who had better garments or more refined comforts than Mus'ab ibn Umair (Radiyallahu Anhu)." Yet when he embraced Islam, his mother tried hard to persuade him to rescind his faith and go back to old pagan beliefs, but he adamantly refused. She stopped giving him anything, but he did not care for such luxuries. He remained one of Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam most faithful companions. Hamnah Radiyallahu Anha gave him a daughter named Zaynab Radiyallahu Anha.

When a Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam and his companions immigrated to Madinah, Hamnah and her husband Radiyallahu Ahnhuma were among the early immigrants, as were the rest of her Muslim family. They were all devoted servants of Islam. The Quraysh, the people of Makkah, launched several attacks on Madinah to try to subdue the newly established Muslim state. Hamnah Radiyallahu Anha was one of the women who went with the Muslim army to nurse the wounded and give water to the thirsty.

In the Battle of Uhud, the Muslims suffered a heavy defeat, with 70 of their people killed. She was with the army, but she was not aware who were killed. She saw Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam soon after the battle and he told her to endure her loss with patience. She asked him whom He meant. He (Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam)said: "Your maternal uncle, Hamzah (Radiyallahu Anhu)." She said: "To Allah do we all belong and to Him shall we all return. May Allah forgive him and bestow mercy on him. He is blessed as a martyr in Jannah."

Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam again told her to bear her loss with patience. When she asked him whom He meant, He (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) said: "Your brother Abdullah (Radiyallahu Anhu)." She repeated what she said about her uncle. Yet Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam told her of another loss, and on her enquiry he mentioned her husband, Mus'ab ibn Umair (Radiyallahu Anhu). This time, she screamed, saying: "Woe is me! Oh, for my grief!" It was then commented : "A husband has a unique position with his wife no one else can fill."

Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam asked her afterwards why she panicked. She said: "Messenger of Allah I remembered that his children are now orphaned and I panicked." Apparently, they were still young as Mus'ab was probably about 35 when he died. Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam made Duaa for her and them, mentioning in his Duaa that Allah may grace them with His kindness and give them generously.

Hamnah Radiyallahu Anha later married Talhah ibn Ubaydillah Radiyallahu Anhu, one of the ten companions of Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam whom he favored with the happy news of admission into Jannah. She gave her new husband a son, and she took the baby to Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam requesting him to choose a name for him. Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam named the baby Muhammad and gave him the nickname Abu Al-Qasim. Talhah Radiyallahu Anhu treated his stepchildren most kindly.

Hamnah Radiyallahu Anha reported a number of Ahaadeeth, one of which gives instructions on what should a woman do with regard to her obligatory prayers if she has continuous bleeding, beyond the normal period. She suffered that condition and was not shy to ask Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam what to do. He gave her detailed instructions which apply to anyone suffering that condition. Her son, Imran ibn Talhah Radiyallahu Anhu, reports some of the Ahaadeeth she narrated.

THE SMILE (True Stories)

IS OUR PLANET GOING TO THE DOGS?

* (18-06-11) In the most recent political protests and rioting in the Greek capital Athens, one protester has been present at the front-line, unafraid of tear gas, gunfire and a barrage of missiles being thrown. The stray dog called Loukanikos, or Sausage, has been in the heart of the action for years. Louk has been turning up at just about every protest in the beleaguered capital since 2008. Louk barks away towards police. Indeed the protesters have adopted the protesting canine and have been known to feed it and generally stroke him or pat him him on the head between throwing a rock or Molotov cocktail.

* (18-06-11) Sentenced to death by a rabbinical court in Jerusalem, Israel, a wandering dog managed to escape the wrath of fanatics while leaving behind serious questions about the sanity of the judge who passed the "judgment". The reason given by the ruling judge for the dog's death sentence was that it appeared to the judge the dog was possessed by an evil spirit. The spirit in question was in fact that of a secular lawyer who had insulted the Jew judges two decades ago. The dog entered the Monetary Affairs Court (underscored) in Mea Shearim (Jerusalem) several weeks ago, and would not leave despite repeated attempts by those inside the court to drive it away. This frightened the judges as one of them suddenly remembered that a lawyer was cursed to be turned into a dog twenty years ago by the same court on account of contempt of court. At once, the judges decided that it was the same lawyer back in court. So they ordered the dog to be stoned to death, the stoning to be carried out by local children (emphasis added). It wasn't a written order, like a formal court decree, but ordering children to stone an animal to death has thrown us wondering who was more possessed at that time: the dog or the judges? Good thing the dog escaped the scene, though not any details were given about his fortunate run.

OR ARE WE CREATING OUR OWN ENEMIES?

* (12-06-11) A recent report estimates that within four years the amount of gadgets connected to the Internet will be twice the world's population. The demand for smart gadgets continues to increase, and has no plans of falling by the wayside anytime soon. In reflection of humanity's love for multimedia devices, a report by Cisco predicts that we will be outnumbered by our electronic "friends" come 2015. There are expected to be around 15 billion tablets, PCs, smartphones and other Internet-based gadgets.
