HADEETH

MIRAAJ (JOURNEY TO THE SEVEN HEAVENS)

Today's Hadeeth is focused on one particular narration. Other narrations might have slight differences .e.g. The offering of honey and milk etc. at a different time. It does not necessarily mean that one is right and the other is fabricated. It is also reported that Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam was taken to Masjidul Aqsa before going up to the heavens however this particular narration is focusing on the trip to the heavens only. Some portions of this Hadeeth is summarised.

Malik Bin Sa'sa'ah Radiyallahu Anhu narrates that once Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam informed us regarding the event of Miraaj. "I was lying down in the Hateem (The portion near the Kaabah surrounded by a low wall) and cut between here and here (Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam indicated from the pit of His chest till below His navel). He took out my heart, washed it in a golden cup that was filled with Imaan (Faith) and then placed it back in my chest.

Thereafter a white animal that was smaller than a mule but bigger than a donkey was brought to me. It was called Buraaq. One step of the Buraaq was as far as the eye can see. I then mounted the Buraaq. Jibraeel Alaihis Salaam and I rode until we reached the first sky.

When Jibraeel Alaihis Salaam sought permission to enter, it was asked "Who is it?". Jibraeel Alaihis Salaam replied that it was He. It was then asked "And who is with you?". Jibraeel alaihis Salaam replied "Muhammed". Jibraeel Alaihis Salaam replied in the affirmative when it was asked if revelation had been sent to this person (Muhammed Sallallahu Alaihis Wa Sallam). The person asking the questions then said "Welcome to Him, how good is He who has come!" The heaven was then opened and when I entered, it was Adam Alaihis Salaam who stood there. Jibraeel Alaihis Salaam said this is your father Adam (This is not referring to biological father) and He instructed me to greet him. I greeted him and he greeted back. Thereafter he said "Welcome unto the righteous son and the righteous prophet." We then went to the second heaven….."

SUMMARISED...

Second heaven: The exact same incident took place in the other heavens with slight differences. Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam met Yahya and Isa Alaihimus Salaam who were biological cousins (Mothers were sisters). Jibraeel Alaihis Salaam did not refer to the rest as "Your father" and they did not refer to Nabi Salaalahu Alaihis Salllam as "Righteous Son" but rather "Righteous Brother" (Except on the seventh heaven).

Third Heaven: Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam met Yusuf Alaihis Salaam.

Fourth Heaven: Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam met Idrees Alaihis Salaam.

Fifth Heaven: Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam met Haroon Alaihis Salaam.

Sixth Heaven: Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam met Moosa Alaihis Salaam. When Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam intended to go to the seventh heaven, Moosa Alaihis Salaam started to weep. When asked the reason for his weeping, he replied "Here is a young man who was sent down after me but more of his followers will enter Jannah than my followers".

Seventh Heaven: Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam met Ebrahim Alaihis Salaam. Like the first heaven, Jibraeel Alaihis Salaam referred to Ebrahim Alaihis Salaam as "Your father" and he referred to Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam as "Righteous son".

HADEETH CONTINUES...

"I was then raised to the farthest Lote-tree (Sidratul Muntahaa). Its fruits were oike the jars of Hajar and its leaves were like the ears of elephants. Jibraeel Alaihis Salaam said: This is the farthest Lote-tree. There are four rivers, two are hidden and two are open.

I asked, "O Jibraeel what are these two?" He replied, "The hidden two are rivers of Jannah and the two that are open (Apparent) are the Nile and Euphrates (These are two rivers of Paradise. The land around these rivers will be under the sway of the Muslims and the religion of Islam for all time to come). Thereafter I was taken to Baytul Ma'mur (Some Ulema are of the opinion that it is a place in the Heavens directly above the Kabah around which the angels make Tawaaf).

Then a vessel of wine, a vessel of milk and a vessel of honey was brought before me. I chose the vessel of milk upon which Jibraeel Alaihis Salaam remarked "It is a natural disposition upon which you and your followers stand" (Milk has been spoken of as a natural disposition as milk nourishes the body of a child just when it is born).

Thereafter fifty times daily Salaah was made obligatory upon my Ummah. On my way back I passed by Moosa Alaihis Salaam who asked me "What have you been commanded with?" I said I have been commanded with fifty daily Salaah. Moosa Alaihis Salaam said "Your Umaah will never handle fifty Salaah daily. By the oath of Allah I am experienced with the people that came before you. I have made effort on the people of Israeel (Bani Israeel). Go back to your Rabb and ask Him to lessen it for your Ummah. I returned and ten Salaah were lifted."

SUMMARISED...

Moosa Alaihis Salaam was still not happy with forty and sent Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam back a few times. The Salaaah dropped to thirty, then to twenty, then to ten and then to five. Moosa Alaihis Salaam advised Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam to go back however Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam said "I have asked my Rabb to the extent that I am now ashamed to ask for more however I am happy with this decision and I accept."

HADEETH CONTINUES...

"When I passed by, a voice proclaimed: I have confirmed My compulsory order and lightened (the weight) of my servants."
