THE FRIDAY SERMON

Beauty, in form and function

The human race has indeed come a long way from the days of hunters and gatherers. In those early days, our ancestors took stones, wood and bone, and shaped them to make them useful. They made these tools, for hunting, killing, building, and for creating.

If we look around us today, we find ourselves surrounded by the manufactured things of modern life. These products are more sophisticated than stone-age implements, but they are still artefacts. Human hands made these things for our benefit. Like clothing, crockery, carpets, cars and computers, human hands gave them form, and function. Human hands took the raw material, then refined it and subjected it to human needs. All these products serve us and therefore we value them.

In a very real and literal sense, we human beings, are also tools. We are artefacts, we are manufactured goods with a form and a function. We have an impact on our environment. We have the ability to do a great deal of good, or a great deal of evil. We can either enhance the quality of life for other creatures, or we can destroy them. Our Manufacturer, our Creator, in His infinite Wisdom, has placed us at the very top of His Creation.

Allah Ta'aala says: "We have created Man in the best of moulds .."

And if we look around us, we find that we are indeed, the most refined, most highly developed of Alláh's created things. But, just in case we become too conceited and arrogant, in the very next verse, we are reminded of the darker side of human nature.

Allah Ta'aala says: "Then do we abase him to be the lowest of the low…"

"Except those who believe and do righteous deeds, for they shall have a reward unfailing."

Thus, we human beings are described as the best of Allah's creation, His masterpiece. However, we are not the kind of masterpiece that only exists to be admired in an art gallery. That is a passive role and we were created for an active role. We have an important function. And we need to understand very clearly what that function is. When Allah Ta'aala announced to the angels that He was going to create a Khaleefa, an Ambassador, on earth, they replied: "Are you going to create one who will spread mischief and shed blood, while we celebrate your praises and glorify Your Holy Name? Alláh said, I know, what you know not."

Allah Ta'aala says: "I have only created jinns and men, that they may serve/worship Me"

Our purpose is therefore perfectly clear. Not only are we created in the best of moulds, but we are also the Ambassadors of Allah. We are here to serve him, and like good ambassadors, we must shape our will according to what pleases our Master. Anything less than this would be a betrayal of the Trust, which Allah Most Gracious has placed in us. It is vital that we understand and accept the great responsibility, which He has placed, on our shoulders.

Allah Ta'aala says: "It is Alláh who has made for you the earth as a resting place, and the sky as a canopy, and has given you shape, and made your shapes beautiful, and has provided for you Sustenance, of things pure and good; such is Alláh your Rabb. So Glory to Alláh, the controller of the Worlds!"

DUA (PRAYER)

DUAA FOR ISTIKHAARAH

In yesterday's edition of the Newsletter we mentioned Salaatul Istikhaarah under the "Fiqh" column. Hereunder is the Duaa for Istikhaarah:

"Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi ilmika wa astaqdiruka bi qudratika wa asaluka min fadhlikal atheem fa innaka taqdiru wa laa aqdiru wa ta'lamu wa laa a'lamu wa anta allaamul ghuyub. Allahumma in kunta ta'lamu anna haathal amra khayrul li fi deeni wa ma'aashi wa aaqibati amri faqdirhu li wa yassirhu li thumma baarik li fihi, wa in kunta ta'lamu anna haathal amra sharrul li fi deeni wa ma'aashi wa aaqibati amri fas rifhu anni was rifni anhu waq dirli alkhayraa haythu kaana thummar dini bihi."

O Allah I ask of you the good through your knowledge and I ask you to grant me ability through your power and beg your favour out of your infinite bounty. For surely You have power and I have none. You know all and I know not. You are the knower of all that is hidden. O Allah, if in your knowledge this matter be good for my faith (Deen), my livelihood and the consequences of my affairs (in the world and the hereafter) then ordain it for me and make it easy for me and bless me therein and if in Your knowledge this matter be bad for my faith, my livelihood and the consequences of my affairs (in the world and the hereafter) then turn it away from me and turn me away therefrom and ordain for me the good wherever it be and cause me to be pleased therewith.

When one comes to the words in bold, one should contemplate over the matter in which guidance is sought.

N.B. Performing Istikhaarah before retiring to bed is not mentioned in the narrations of Hadeeth however most Ulema are of the opinion that this is the preferred method.

* Eskom said that electricity demand was back at levels last seen in 2007 just before the country experienced a near collapse of the national grid. Concerns about South Africa's electricity capacity, combined with Europe's worsening debt crisis, were said to be behind the rand's fall against the dollar.

THE SMILE

Abe and Esther, a South African couple are flying to Australia for a two-week vacation. Suddenly, over the public address system, the Captain announces..."Ladies and Gentlemen, I am afraid I have some very bad news. Our engines have ceased functioning and we will attempt an emergency landing. Luckily, I see an uncharted island below us and we should be able to land on the beach. However, the odds are that we may never be rescued and will have to live on the island for the rest of our lives!"

Thanks to the skill of the flight crew, the plane lands safely on the island. An hour later Abe turns to his wife and asks, "Esther, did you bring the laptop along?" "No, sweetheart," she responds.

Abe, still shaken from the crash landing, then asks, "Esther, did you bring the cellphone?" "Yes but theres no signal on this island! I'm sorry" she says.

"One last thing, Esther. That indian bloke at the general dealer his mates call him mota...did you pay him our account this month ?" he asks. "Oh, forgive me, Abe," begged Esther. "I thought I'll pay it when we return."

Abe runs and starts screaming out of joy like a lunatic then grabs Esther and gives her the biggest kiss in 40 years. Esther pulls away and asks him, "What was that for?"

Abe answers, "I know them Indian blokes...They'll find us!"
