PERSONALITY

The Prophet's foster mother Fatimah Bint Asad Radiyallahu anhaa

Fatimah bint Asad Radiyallahu anhaa belonged to the Hashimite clan. Her grandfather was Hashim, the Prophet's (peace be upon him) great-grandfather. When Muhammad Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam was only eight years old, he lost his grandfather, Abd Al-Muttalib who was looking after him after he had lost both his parents.

When Abd Al-Muttalib realized that he was about to die, he called his son Abu Talib and entrusted the young Muhammad (Peace be upon him) to his care. Although Abd Al-Muttalib had many sons at the time, he chose Abu Talib because Abdullah, the Prophet's father, was his full brother and because he knew Fatimah to be a kindly and caring woman. She proved to be a great choice, as she looked after Muhammad (Peace be upon him) as well as she looked after her own children. In order to appreciate how caring she was, we take the Prophet Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam's own words.

When she passed away, he made Dua for her, saying: "May Allah have mercy on you, mother. You were my mother after my own mother had passed away. You left yourself hungry to feed me and in rags to clothe me. You deprived yourself of the best food to give it to me. Your aim was to please Allah".

When the Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam received his message and was told to call on people to embrace Islam, Fatimah Radiyallahu anhaa was one of the earliest people to respond. We know that her son, Ali Radiyallahu anhu, was one of the first four people to accept it. Fatimah Radiyallahu anhaa is reported to have been the eleventh person to become a Muslim. Needless to say, her knowledge of the Prophet Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam's character, whom she had brought up, was sufficient for her to realize that he, who never told a lie could not make a false claim.

Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam was the most dutiful of people. Whenever anyone did him a kindness, he would repay it in the most generous way. Fatimah Radiyallahu anhaa immigrated to Madinah with all members of the Prophet's household, except his daughter Zainab Radiyallahu anhaa who remained with her husband. Fatimah Radiyallahu anhaa was a widow at the time. Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam used to visit her at home, and would even have an afternoon nap in her home. It was not long after their settlement in Madinah that her son, Ali Radiyallahu anhu, married the Prophet's own daughter Fatimah Radiyallahu anhaa. Thus she became the Prophet's daughter's mother-in-law. She was very kind to her and helped her in every way she could.

When Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam had something to give as a present he did not omit to give her a share, treating her in the same way as he treated his own daughter. Once Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam was sent a suit made of velvet. He would not wear that, as he did not like to wear luxurious clothes. He gave the suit to Ali Radiyallahu anhu and told him: "Make it as scarves and give it to the Fatimahs."

Ali Radiyallahu anhu mentioned that he made four scarves: One for his mother, Fatimah bint Asad, one for his wife, Fatimah bint Muhammad, and one for his cousin Fatimah bint Hamzah, and the last for his sister-in-law, Fatimah bint Shaibah, Aqeel's wife.

When Fatimah bint Asad Radiyallahu anhaa passed away, Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam prayed for her as we have already mentioned. He took part in preparing her for burial, pouring the water over her body for her final bath. He took off his shirt and put it on her, wrapping her body with a suitable cover above it. He took part in preparing her grave. He even lay in it.

He then said: "It is Allah who gives life and causes death. He is the One who is always alive and never dies. My Rabb, forgive my mother Fatimah bint Asad her sins, grant her proof, make her entrance wide. I appeal to You by the truth of Your messengers and the Prophets before me. You are the most merciful."

Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam was asked why he did those things for Fatimah bint Asad Radiyallahu anhaa. He answered: "Next to Abu Talib no one was more kindly to me than her. I dressed her in my shirt so that she would be given suits from Jannah, and I lay in her grave so as to make her last dwelling easier for her."

LITERATURE (Origions)

Ever wondered about the origin of common phrases that we use in our everyday life...

* "Good night, sleep tight"

Meaning: A kind gesture offered for one to enjoy a deep, warm and comfortable sleep.

Origin: In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed more firm to sleep on. Hence the phrase "goodnight, sleep tight".

* "Cold shoulder"

Meaning: A display of coldness or indifference, intended to wound.

Origin: The origin of this expression which is often repeated is that visitors to a house who were welcome were given a hot meal but those who weren't were offered only 'cold shoulder of mutton'. This is repeated in several etymological texts, including Hendrickson's usually reliable 'Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins'. There's no evidence to support this view though and some are of the opinion that the above holds no weight.

* "Don't count your chickens before they hatch"

Meaning: Don't be hasty in evaluating one's assets.

Origin: Many of the proverbial words of advice that have lasted the test of time begin with "don't". We are warned not to "keep a dog and bark ourselves", "look a gift horse in the mouth", "change horses in mid-stream" etc. "Don't count your chickens" is one of the oldest, and possibly the wisest, of these. The thought was recorded in print by Thomas Howell in New Sonnets and pretty Pamphlets, 1570:

"Counte not thy Chickens that vnhatched be,
Waye wordes as winde, till thou finde certaintee"

A THOUGHT
"The beauteous yesterday is fading away lika a blushed twilight. Though nothing can bring back the memories of sweet treasured past, I will grieve not but rather find splendor in the memories"
THE SMILE (True Stories)

* A thief in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina has learned a valuable lesson: if you're going to steal restaurant equipment, be sure to remove pictures of the original owner's grandchildren before setting the stuff up in your own restaurant. John Ubbing, owner of Giovanni's Pizzeria in Calabash, North Carolina, lost an assortment of pizza-making equipment in a March robbery. A refrigerator stolen in the heist later turned up inside a Myrtle Beach restaurant where cops found pictures of Ubbing's grandchildren still stuck to the side of it. The owner of the second restaurant was arrested.

* During a high school break-in in Plymouth, North Carolina, two burglars found a camera in one of the classrooms and amused themselves by taking pictures of each other committing the crime. When they couldn't figure out how to get the film out of the camera, they concluded it wasn't loaded and left it behind. The men apparently didn't realize they'd been fooling around with a digital camera. Investigators downloaded the snapshots to a computer and got a complete photographic record of the break-in. The suspects were quickly arrested.
