THE MESSAGE
NO THING AS AN ORDINARY MUSLIM: REMEMBERING HITTIN AND SALAHUDEEN

By Umm Abdillah – Radio Islam Programming

July 4 marks the anniversary of the Battle of Hittin in 1187, between the Crusaders of Jerusalem and the forces of the Ayyubid dynasty under Salahudeen. It bears remembering these events, least for how they formed the historical and religious geopolitics of the day, more to liberate our lusting for a Muslim saviour to rescue our besieged psyches. We only need acknowledge how much local Muslimdom wants to appropriate Nelson Mandela (as one of our own) to decide how deeply this complex runs. We aren’t however the first, or last to try to own a hero. Sometimes we need to be reminded as the ‘best of all creation’ we each possess the tools to be great, here, and in a world beyond.

Yusuf bin Ayyub, better known as Salahudeen, has a history well documented with intense virtue. In twelve years he united a previously weakened and warring Mesopotamia, Syria, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, the Western parts of the Arabian Peninsula and Yemen under the Ayyubid Dynasty. He fought off repeated attacks by the Crusaders on Egypt, put down revolts within the army and gave Egypt respite from incessant civil war. Despite three centuries of Fatimid rule, the Egyptian population had remained Sunni, following the Sunnah schools of Fiqh. In 1171, Salahuddin abolished the (Shia) Fatimid Caliphate. The Fatimids, once so powerful that they controlled more than half of the Islamic world including Makkah, Madina and Jerusalem, passed into silent history. read more

No matter how freely water may be available, it should not be wasted. Even if one is at the sea-shore, one should not use more than necessary. At the same time, one should not use so little water that one has problems in washing the parts thoroughly.

RECIPE
Methi Rati - Sweeti Roti

2 cups oil dhal
2 cups water
¼ tsp elachi powder
2 ½ cups sugar
2 Tblsp ghee

Method:
Soak dhal overnight or at least for a few hours in cold water.Wash off all the skins. Put in pot with hot water and bring to boil, then reduce heat and allow to simmer slowly till soft and mushy. Sieve through wire strainer. Return to pot, add sugar and elachi powder and cook till nearly dry. Stir continuously to prevent scorching. Add ghee and allow to attain a lovely golden colour. Cool, then form into ping pong sized balls and leave aside on floured plate or board.

The dough:
2 cups flour
3 Tbsp ghee

Method:

Rub ghee in flour until fine like breadcrumbs. Using just sufficient boiling water, knead into dough the consistency of puri dough.

Caution:

To make the rotis:
Divide dough into balls which are the same size as the dhal balls. Roll each one into circles, approximately thrice its present size. Place a ball of dhal in the centre and carefully close over with dough. Roll out again in neat even strokes; avoid breaking of dough till roti is size of a small bread plate. Braise on tawa and as soon as underside is slightly freckled turn over and as soon as it balloons up pour over a dessertspoonful of melted ghee on either side and braise till gold in colour.

CHEAP TICKET

As an airline reservation agent, I took a call from a man who wanted to book a flight for two but wasn't happy with the price of $59 per ticket. "I want the $49 fare I saw advertised," he insisted, saying he would accept a flight at any time. I managed to find two seats on a 6 a.m. flight. "I'll take it," he said, then worried his wife might not like the early hour. I warned there was a $25 fee per person if he changed the reservation. "Oh, that's no problem," he said dismissively. "What's fifty bucks?"
