AN AMAZING STORY DISPLAYING THE JUSTICE OF ISLAM Samarqand was conquered by Said ibn Uthman during the Ummayad dynasty by means of a truce with the local inhabitants. Later during the reign of Walid Ibn Abdul Malik, in the year 96 Hijra, it was again conquered by Qutaiba Ibn Muslim. This time, however, it was conquered contrary to the spirit of Islam. The existing truce was broken and without any warning of an attack it was captured forcefully. This was against the command of the Quran, which prohibited the Muslims from waging war against a nation with whom a peace treaty had been reached. The inhabitants accepted the conquest reluctantly fearing retaliation from the Muslims. When Umar ibn Abdul Aziz became the Khalîfah of the Muslims, in the year 99 Hijra the news of his love for justice and his dislike for oppression reached the non-Muslims of Samarqand. They sent a delegation to him complaining of the unjust conquest of their city. The Khalîfah wrote to Suleiman Ibn Abu Sarh, the governor of Samarqand, instructing him to appoint a judge to settle the case. A judge was duly appointed. He heard the testimony of the inhabitants of Samarqand. He then called for witnesses from the army of Qutaibah Ibn Muslim who testified that Qutaibah had indeed broken the truce and attacked without warning. The judge ordered the Muslim army under the command of Qutaiba to immediately leave Samarqand. He further instructed all the Muslims who had entered Samarqand after this conquest to leave as well. He commanded a return to the truce that had existed at the time of the first conquest. This verdict shocked the inhabitants of Samarqand. They had never expected justice of this magnitude. The command of the judge instructing the Muslims to leave Samarqand after they had established themselves for seven years displayed the overwhelming justice of Islam. They immediately convened amongst themselves and sent a delegation to the governor informing him of their surprise at the verdict in their favour. They were now prepared to waive their right and asked the Muslims to remain in Samarqand having total conviction that no harm would come to them from the side of the Muslims. This event caused many of the non-Muslim inhabitants of Samarqand to accept Islam. (Futoohul Buldaan, Baladhuri) Lesson: Islam promotes justice to all people. Oppression and injustice can never be condoned no matter who commits it. |

MUTTON KORMA RICE RECIPE 3 cups rice boiled with cinnamon stick, whole jeeru, and ½ tsp arad/turmeric. Set aside. Make vagaar with onions and jeeru, braise masalas and add spices, add mutton and cook till almost done. Add tin tomatoes and cook completely till mutton is well done. Remove from heat and add yoghurt, mix this well. Layer in pot, first add a little rice at the bottom of your pot with some ghee, add mutton mixture, potatoes and top with balance of the rice, pour over some saffron water and leave to steam. |
