UNDERSTANDING THE QUR’AN
SURAH NAAZIAAT CONTINUED…
IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE BENEFICIENT THE MOST MERCIFUL

2. And by those (angels) who untie the knot (of the souls of the believers) smoothly.

Commentary: The second quality of the angels: (and by those [angels] who untie the knot [of the souls of the believers] smoothly. The word Nashitauti is derived from Nasht and it means 'to untie the knot'. This signifies 'to untie the knot of something which contains water or air, so that it may be released easily'. This is metaphor for drawing out the souls of the believers gently, unlike the souls of the infidels which are plucked out harshly. In this case too the adverb 'smoothly' refers to the spiritual smoothness, and not to the physical experience.

Sometimes, it happens that there is a delay at the time of death of a righteous believer. This may not be suspected to mean that he is undergoing some sort of suffering, although physically it may seem so. When the soul of an infidel is extracted, the entire scene of the punishment of Barzakh (intervening period) comes in front of him. It is frightened by it, disperses throughout the body and tries to hide or escape. The angels forcefully extract the soul just as wet wool wrapped around a skewer is forcefully removed. When the soul of a believer is extracted, on the other hand, the reward, the blessings and the welcome news of the Barzakh come in front of him.

THE MESSAGE
How to deal with bitter criticism
-------------------------------------
Those who are ignorant even utter curses at Allah, who is The Perfect, The Faultless. So imagine what treatment we, who are full of faults, expect from others.

We will always face criticism, which in its onslaught is like an endless war: it shows no sign of ending. As long as we shine, give, produce, and affect others, disapproval and condemnation will be our lot in life. Unless we escapes from people by finding a tunnel in the ground or a ladder leading to the sky, people will not desist from censuring, from finding fault in our character. For that reason, as long as we are resident on the earth, expect to be hurt, to be insulted, and to be criticized. read more

DUA/PRAYER
DISTRESS
Abi Bakrata RA stated that the Messenger of Allah said, "The supplications of the distressed are: 'Allãhumma rahmataka 'arjoo, falã takilnee 'ilã nafsee tarfata `eynin, wa'aslihlee sha'nee kullahu, la 'ilãha 'illã 'anta.

O' my 'ilãh it is your Mercy that I beseech, so do not entrust me to my self for even a twinkle of an eye, and correct for me all my affairs, there is no 'ilãh other then You.

AND… FOR THE KIDDIES
The Beautiful Clock

One day, all the pupils of the class were asked to bring something beautiful to school. Their teacher wanted them to look at the beautiful item and write about it. Some children brought flowers, whistle others brought pictures or fancy boxes.

The loveliest thing brought that day was Zahra’s beautiful clock. It was pink and silver. Zahra’s mother had bought it for her when she had learnt to tell the time. Everyone admired the clock and wanted to touch it. Zahra did not let anyone touch it as it was very delicate and she did not want it to break.

During the break, Basheera, a girl in Zahra’s class, decided to have a closer look at the clock. Zahra was busy with her friends when Basheera decided to pick up the clock. “Don’t touch it,” another girl warned. “You don’t have permission.”

Basheera did not listen to them. “I’m just looking at it,” she replied. But then, as she held the clock in her hands, she felt it slip from her fingers. CRASH! The clock fell to the floor and broke into pieces.

Zahra heard the noise and rushed to see what had happened. She saw, to her horror that her beautiful clock was broken. Tears filled her eyes. “Oh Basheera, why did you have to touch it?” she asked.” “My clock is now broken and my mother will not be able to buy another one.” She sat down and cried.

Basheera felt very bad upon seeing Zahra cry. She also began to cry. She knew that she should not have touched the clock without permission. She felt so guilty.

Basheera went home crying that day. She immediately told her mother the story. Her mother scolded her for touching something that did not belong to her. “You will have to buy Zahra another clock,” her mother said. “Will you lend me the money?” Basheera asked.

Her mother replied firmly, “I do not need to lend you the money. You already have money saved.”

“But I saved that money so that I could buy something special for myself, “Basheera said sadly. “Can’t we use your money to buy the clock?” “No,” said her mother. “I did not break the clock, you did! You will have to use your own money. I hope that you learn a lesson from this.”

Basheera’s mother phoned Zahra’s mother and found out where she had bought the clock. Basheera and her mother then went to the same shop to buy another clock. They managed to get one that looked just like the one that Basheera had broken. Zahra was very happy to get the new clock.

All Basheera’s savings were now used up. She began to save again. She will soon have enough to buy something wonderful for herself. She now knows better then to touch things that do not belong to her.

A THOUGHT
If you fill your heart with regrets of yesterday and the worries of tomorrow, you have no today to be thankful for.

THE SMILE
A man observed a woman in the grocery store with a three-year-old girl in her basket.

As they passed the biscuit section, the child asked for cookies, and her mother told her “no.” The little girl immediately began to whine and fuss and the mother said quietly, “Now Ellen, we just have half of the aisles left to go through; don't be upset. It won't be long.” He passed the mother again in the candy aisle. Of course, the little girl began to shout for candy. When she was told she couldn't have any, she began to cry. The mother said, “There, there, Ellen, don't cry. Only two more aisles to go, and then we'll be checking out.” The man happened to be behind the pair in the checkout line, where the little girl began to clamor for gum and burst into a terrible tantrum upon discovering her mother would not buy any gum. “Ellen, we'll be through this checkout stand in five minutes, and then you can go home and have a nice nap,” the mother said.

The man followed them out to the parking lot and stopped the woman to compliment her. “I couldn't help noticing how patient you were with little Ellen,” he said. The mother replied, “My little girl's name is Tammy. I'm Ellen.”
