THE FRIDAY KHUTBAH (SERMON)
BENEFICIAL LESSONS DERIVED FROM THE HIJRAH
By Ali Al-Hudhayfi (Imaam of Haram)
---------------------------------
All praise is due to Allaah, the Subduer. I testify that there is nothing worthy of worship except Allaah and I testify that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

Fellow Muslims! Fear Allaah as He should be feared so that you will prosper in this world and the Hereafter.

Fellow Muslims! The aspiration of lofty goals and the fulfilment of one's religious obligations require a great deal of time, effort and wealth. One’s very life may even be at stake during the course of fulfilling these great objectives in addition to the loss of friends, the gaining of enemies, the exposition of oneself to ridicule and the vulnerability of having few helpers and protectors. This in fact was exactly the situation of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam during his propagation of Islam.

Allaah sent Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam to mankind at the time when they were most in need of his message. The People of the Book (i.e. the Jews and Christians) had by then altered their books and the whole world was in the total darkness of polytheism and ignorance. It was at this time that Allaah chose to send His slave Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam to mankind.

The Almighty says that which translates as: "Say [O Muhammad], ‘O Mankind, indeed I am the Messenger of Allaah to you all, [from Him] to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death.’” (Al-A'raaf: 158).

The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam was sent at a time when people were worshipping unworthy objects such as trees, stones, the moon, angels, Jinns, the prophet 'Iesaa (or Jesus, peace be upon him) etc. He sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam found them supplicating to these deities, seeking assistance and refuge with them, beseeching them for benefits, slaughtering for them, vowing to them, and taking them as intermediaries to Allaah. He sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam also found them consulting fortune-tellers and sorcerers, spreading immorality, mistreating neighbours, severing bonds of kinship, earning money from dubious means, practicing interest-based transactions and usurping other people's properties. This was in addition to all the other well-known evils that were prevalent in that society. Their religion, customs and traditions were purely based on personal interests and material considerations. read more

DUA/PRAYER
DEBTS
It is reported of 'Ali bin 'Abi Tãlib that someone who was indebted came to him and said: I am unable to pay my debt so help me. He said: Shall I not teach you a few words the Messenger of Allah taught me, if you had the like of a mountain (Seerin) of debt Allah would fulfil it on your behalf? Say:

'Allãhumma kfinee bihalãlika `an harãmika, wa 'aghninee bifadhlika ` amman siwãka.. O' my 'ilãh make me with what You have made lawful needless of what You have made unlawful, and make me with your benevolence independent of all others. And he would say: Your forefather (speaking to the two) used to solicit protection for Isma`eel and Ishãq with this supplication.

Indonesia's attorneys are expected to announce an execution date for the three men convicted of carrying out the 2002 Bali night club bombings. Amrozi Nurhasyim, Ali Gufron and Imam Samudra have exhausted all appeals and will be executed by firing squad. A date for the sentence to be carried out is expected to be announced on Friday.

At least two journalists have been killed in a bomb blast in Zagreb, the Croatian capital. The explosion was outside the offices of a weekly newspaper in the centre of the city on Thursday. Police declined to give more details on the incident, the latest in a wave of violence that has gripped the Croatian capital this year.

Turkey's constitutional court has ruled that key members of the ruling AK Party, including Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the prime minister, have been involved in anti-secular activities. Friday's ruling was related to a case which sought to ban the party on charges it was seeking to throw out the country's secular system, in favour of an Islamist regime.

The Congress of SA Trade Unions today applauded Parliament for responding to the "voice of the majority" and quickly passing the ANC's resolution to have the Scorpions disbanded. The Directorate of Special Operations (DSO or Scorpions) had become "a separate elite force which was not subject to adequate public accountability and became a law unto themselves", said spokesperson Patrick Craven.

The 18-year-old boy accused of stabbing a fellow pupil and three other people with a sword s due back in the Krugersdorp Magistrates Court. This comes after extended psychiatric evaluation at Sterkfontein Hospital. The case was postponed for a second time last month, after psychiatrists requested more time to evaluate Morne Harmse.

A THOUGHT

PLEASURES SEEM SWEET
----------------------------
Just so the pleasures of the world seem sweet till they are tried, and then they are found to be very bitter and repulsive. The Prophet Sallahu Alyhi Wa Sallam has declared that "Patience is the key of joy." in other words, that he who controls and restrains himself from grasping at worldly pleasures will find true happiness. But this precept makes no lasting impression on the bulk of humankind. When bitter experience overtakes them, as the pain of burning afflicts children, or moths sporting with fire, or the pain of amputation [of a] a thief, they curse the delusive temptations which brought this pain upon them. But no sooner is the pain abated, then they run after the same pleasures as eagerly as ever.
This leads the poet again to dwell on his favourite theme of the sole agency of Allah.

Then, to supply the necessary corrective of this doctrine, another anecdote is told concerning Mahmud and Ayaz. The courtiers grumbled because Ayaz received the stipend of thirty courtiers, and Mahmud, by a practical test, convinced them that the talents of Ayaz equalled those of thirty men. The courtiers replied that this was due to Allah's grace, not to any merit on the part of Ayaz. And the king confuted them by pointing out that man's responsibility and merit, or demerit, for his actions are recognized in the Quran. Iblis was condemned for saying to Allah, "Thou hast caused me to err," and Adam was commended or saying, "We have blackened ourselves." And elsewhere it is said, "Whosoever shall have wrought an atom's weight of good shall behold it. And whoso[ever] shall have wrought an atom's weight of evil shall behold it."
