THE FRIDAY KHUTBAH (SERMON)
THE END OF OPPRESSION
By Shaykh Usamah Al Khayyat - IMAAM OF HARAM
-----------------------------------------------
All praise is due to Allaah. May peace and blessings be upon the Messenger.

Fellow Muslims! It is of perfect justice and complete mercy and kindness of Almighty Allaah that He prohibited injustice for Himself and made it forbidden among His slaves as well. He says as narrated by His Messenger, “O My slaves! Indeed, I have forbidden injustice for Myself and made it also forbidden amongst you, so, do not wrong one another.” (Muslim)

Injustice comes in different colours and forms but the most repugnant of that is causing aggression on the earth without right and harming people in their bodies, religion, property, honour or intellect in different oppressive ways which all wise and reasonable people unanimously condemn and warn against. That is why it is explicitly forbidden among the fundamentally forbidden things and people are warned of its heinous consequences. Allaah says,

“Say (O Muhammad): The things that my Lord has indeed forbidden are great evil sins whether committed openly or secretly, sins (of all kinds), unrighteous oppression, joining partners in worship with Allaah for which He has given no authority and saying things about Allaah of which you have no knowledge.” (Al-A‘raaf 7:33)

Allaah also threatens those who take to oppression with a severe punishment when He says, “The way (of blame) is only against those who oppress man and rebel in the earth without justification for such there will be a painful torment.” (Ash-Shoorah 42:42)

This severe punishment is only a part of the later punishment for oppression. The oppressor will also be punished in this world. The Prophet Sallallahu Alyhi Wa Sallam said, “There is no sin that its perpetrator deserves to be quickly punished in this world in addition to the punishment of the Hereafter more than oppression and severing of the tie of kinship.” (Abu Dawood and others) The worldly punishment of the oppressor is that he will be afflicted with calamities and will eventually be humiliated and defeated and his aim will not be achieved. read more

DUA/PRAYER
Abu Bakr RA said: The Messenger of Allah said: "Say in the morning and in the evening: 'Allãhumma `ãlim 'al-ghaybi wash-shahãdeti, fatiras-samãwãti wal 'ardhi, rabba kulli shay'in wa maleekahu, 'ashhadu 'an lã 'ilãha 'illã 'anta, 'a`outhu bika min sharri nafsee, wa sharrish-shaytãni wa shirkihi.

And, in one narration the following addition: [wa 'an 'aqtarifa `alã nafsee soo'an, 'aw 'ajurrahu 'ilã muslimin] O' my 'ilãh Knower of the hidden, and the visible; Creator of the Heavens and the Earth; Sustainer, and Master of everything; I testify that there is no 'ilãh save Thee, and I seek Thy protection from the evil of my self, and the evil of the Shaytan and his association [with Thee]. Note: this can be a reference to the association, as being his; or a reference to his instigation of association with Allah.

And [I also seek refuge in You] that I bring harm upon myself, or drag it upon another Muslim.

Say it in the morning, and in the evening, and when you take to your bed".

NEWS

Laurent Nkunda, the leader of the rebel group that has been advancing on the Democratic Republic of Congo's city of Goma, has called for direct talks with the government. The government has not yet responded to Nkunda's request, but direct talks could build upon a ceasefire, which has halted much of the fighting in the country's turbulent east. Meanwhile, the United States and the United Nations have sent envoys to help set up negotiations.

Indian police have detained around 12 people suspected of having links to the series of explosions across Assam state that left 71 dead and hundreds injured. A total of 13 explosions ripped through the northeastern state on Thursday, six of which were detonated in the state's capital city, Guwahati.

Thousands of villagers in Pakistan have spent a second night outdoors in sub-zero temperatures after a devastating earthquake destroyed their homes on Wednesday. Rescue efforts have been hampered by a series of aftershocks, following the 6.4 magnitude quake in the Ziarat valley in the province of Baluchistan, which has killed at least 215 people and left more than 15,000 homeless.

The South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) in KwaZulu-Natal says Grade 12 learners are already facing difficulties in this year's final examinations which started on Wednesday. Sadtu spokesperson Sipho Nkosi says this is because this year's learners are the first group to write their matric under the Outcomes Based Education (OBE) programme. Nkosi says though exams began smoothly, they think writing under the new programme will negatively affect non-English speaking students because all exam papers are in English.

Results from Zambia's presidential election are expected to start coming in this morning. Zambians voted yesterday to replace president Levy Mwanawasa, who died in August after a stroke.

A THOUGHT

ALONE ON JUDGMENT DAY
----------------------------------
Thou hast no one in the whole world; why dost thou not weep bitterly over thyself?
For if thou have a hundred friends in thy house, when thou diest, thou wilt find them all strangers.

This grief is not given thee easily; straw will not give the strength of a mountain. If thou wouldst have even an atom of this grief, thou must have the purity of the sea and the endurance of the mountains.

If thou die a moment before thy appointed time, in that one moment thou shalt conquer a whole world. Forsaken and forlorn as thou art, if thou but knewest from Whose presence thou art kept at such a distance. In regret thou wouldst brand thy side and bow thy head over thy knees in confusion.

HILLARIOUS FLIGHT ANNOUNCEMENT
--------------------------------------
Occasionally, airline attendants make an effort to make the "in-flight safety lecture" and their other announcements a bit more entertaining.

Pilot - "Folks, we have reached our cruising altitude now, so I am going to switch the seat belt sign off. Feel free to move about as you wish, but please stay inside the plane till we land... it's a bit cold outside, and if you walk on the wings it affects the flight pattern."
