SURAH AD-DAHR: 76 - (The Time)
With the name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Very-Merciful

And they give food, despite their love for it, to the needy, and the orphan, and the captive, [8]

COMMENTARY: (and they give food, despite their love for it, to the needy, and the orphan, and the captive...76:8). The other reason why the inmates of Paradise will receive these favours is given in this verse, that is, their feeding the needy, the orphans and the captives.

(despite their love for it). This would mean that they give food to the needy while they themselves love it and desire it- not that they eat to their fill and give the left-over food to the needy and poor. That feeding the poor and orphans is a form of worship and attracts reward is obvious. The word 'captive' refers to all prisoners, Muslim criminals, as well as infidels who are kept in prisons according to the principles of Sharl'ah. It is the responsibility of the Islamic government to feed them. Anyone who feeds them is actually assisting the government and the public treasury. Therefore, feeding the prisoners, even Non-Muslims, is an act of reward.

In the early days of Islam, especially, feeding the prisoners and taking care of them or protecting them was a responsibility that was shared by the general body of Muslims, as it happened with the prisoners of the Battle of Badr.

THE MESSAGE

LEARN, RECITE, LIVE AND TEACH THE QURAAN
by Ml Ashraf Ali Thanwi RA
-------------------------

"A person whose breast is devoid of the Qur'aan (i.e. he has not learnt anything of the Qur'aan Majeed) is like a desolate house." (Tirmithi)

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alyhi Wa Sallam said: "On the Day of Qiyaamah a crown of such brilliance will be placed on the heads of the parents of one who learnt the Qur'aan and practised on its laws, that its glitter will outshine the brilliance of the sun which penetrates your houses. What then do you think will be the position of the one who himself learnt the Qur'aan and acted in accordance with it?" (Ahmad and Abu Dawood)

This hadith mentions the great significance of teaching the Qur'aan Majeed to children. It is incumbent, therefore, upon Muslims to ensure that their children learn to recite the Qur'aan Majeed. If for some reason they cannot or do not gain the opportunity of committing the Qur'aan Majeed to memory (Hifz) then at least they should learn it by reciting from the text (Naatharah). However, wherever the opportunity exists for imparting Hifz to the children, advantage should be taken to acquire this great wealth. Indeed it is a wonderful bounty. If for some reason the child does not have the time for learning the whole Qur'aan, then even a portion should be taught to him/her. This hadith exhorts even the acquisition of a portion of the Qur'aan Majeed.

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alyhi Wa Sallam said: "He who recites the Qur'aan, memorises it, accepts its Halaal (lawful things) as Halaal and Haraam (forbidden things) as Haraam (i.e. his beliefs in these matters are correct), Allah Ta'ala will enter him into Jannah and accept his intercession on behalf of ten such persons of his family upon whom entry into Jahannum has become incumbent (i.e. Allah Ta'ala will forgive them because of his intercession)." (Ahmad, Tirmithi, Ibn Majah, Daarami)

The significance of committing the Qur'aan Majeed to memory mentioned in this hadith is far greater than that mentioned in the Hadith. Among one's family members, the closest to one are one's parents. Hence, in terms of the assurance of intercession stated in the hadith the Hafiz's intercession for his parents is a certainty. Parents should now realise the tremendous importance and advantage of making their children Huffaaz of the Qur'aan Majeed.

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alyhi Wa Sallam said: "Hearts (of people) also corrode like steel rusts when exposed to moisture." Someone asked: 'O Rasulullah! What is its polish?' Rasulullah Sallallahu Alyhi Wa Sallam replied: 'Remembering Maut in abundance and recitation of the Qur'aan." (Baihaqi -- Shu'bul Imaan)

Sayyadina Jaabir RA said: "Rasulullah Sallallahu Alyhi Wa Sallam once came to us while we were engaged in reciting the Qur'aan. Among us were some village-folk and non-Arabs (i.e. some people who were not able to recite the Qur'aan properly). Rasulullah Sallallahu Alyhi Wa Sallam said: 'Continue reciting. All are reciting well.' (Abu Dawood, Baihaqi)

From this it will be realised that even if one lacks the ability to recite superbly, one should continue reciting so that the heart becomes adorned. Those who have the ability to recite superbly should not be scornful of those who lack the ability. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alyhi Wa Sallam encouraged all to recite the Qur'aan Majeed even if the recitation is not up to the correct standard.

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alyhi Wa Sallam said: "He who listens to even a single aayat (being recited by another) obtains such a virtue which perpetually multiplies (it increases in Thawaab continuously). The one who recited the aayat will on the Day of Qiyaamah find the recited aayat in the form of a Noor (which will be of greater value and significance than the virtue which accrued to the one who had listened to the recitation)." (Ahmad)

If one is unable to recite, one should always listen to the recital of others. Such listening is rewarded with considerable Thawaab. There is absolutely no difficulty involved in the obtainal of such great thawaab by such a simple method.

The longest-serving female Palestinian prisoner, Suna Ar-Ra’i, will be released by Israel on Sunday after serving 12 years in her second term in prison. Ar-Ra’i is from the West Bank city of Qalqilia. Her brother, Ibrahim Ar-Ra’i, was a leader in the Palestinian resistance who was killed by the Israeli intelligence services in 1988. She was a co-founder of Palestinian women’s committees. Israeli intelligence deprived Suna of family visits for eight years. Her son was only permitted to visit her once during her imprisonment.

A suspected US drone has fired a missile into a Pakistani village, killing at least five tribesmen, residents say. The strike, which took place early on Thursday, aimed at a stronghold of Jalaluddin Haqqani, a veteran Taliban commander. The missile targeted a village in the North Waziristan tribal region near the Afghan border where Haqqani, an old friend of Osama bin Laden, had established a madrasa or religious school.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas yesterday sacked the head of Palestinian general intelligence agency, Tawfiq Al-Tirawi, who has been working since last year to prevent Hamas from extending its control from the Gaza Strip to the West Bank.

South Africa's financial system is "fundamentally sound and well capitalised," according to the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) Article Report released on Wednesday. The report stated that the South African economy had shown resilience during the global financial instability. The report projected growth of 3.8 percent for 2008 and 3.7 percent for next year.

The Government has invested more than R610 million to upgrade the R21 national route linking Ekhurhuleni and Pretoria. A contract to expand the high-traffic volume highway has been awarded to the Power Group Construction company. National Roads Agency says the widening of the gateway road between OR Tambo International Airport and Tshwane is part of the national freeway improvement project. The project is expected to be completed in 2010.

A THOUGHT
Sometimes people set an occasional goal as a mandatory precursor to happiness or to working on other dreams... and these precursors when evaluated actually are impossibilities. Therefore, these individuals will never be happy, nor never get around to working on their other goals. BEWARE of this TRAP!

THE SMILE

IN MOURNING
--------------
A man sees a friend at a Restaurant table, drinking by himself. Approaching the friend, he comments, "You look terrible. What's the problem?" "My mother died in June, and left me $10,000." said the friend. "Gee, that's tough," he replied. "Then in July," the friend continued, "My father died, leaving me $50,000." The man looking concerned says, "Wow. Two parents gone in two months. No wonder you're depressed." The friend continues, "And last month my aunt died, and left me $15,000." "Three close family members lost in three months??? How sad!!!" "Then this month..." continued, the friend, "Nothing! Not a single dime!"
