SURAH AD-DAHR: 76 - (The Time)
With the name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Very-Merciful

So Allah will save them from the evil of that day, and will grant them bloom and delight, [11]

and will give them, in return for their patience, garden and (garments of) silk, [12]

wherein they will be reclining on couches, feeling neither heat of the sun, nor intense cold, [13]

and shades of gardens will be hanging low on them, and its fruits will be put entirely into their service. [14]

And circulated among them will be vessels of silver, and cups that will be (as transparent as) crystals, [15]

crystals (as shining as if made) of silver, measured by those (who filled them) with due measure. [16]

COMMENTARY: (vessels of silver...76:16). Silver vessels in this world are dense which can never be like glass, and that which is made of glass can never be silver. Thus silver and glass are two contradictory concepts in this world. However, it is a characteristic of Paradise that its glasses will be as bright as silver, and as transparent and sparkling as crystal.

Sayyidna Ibn 'Abbas RA. said: "The blessings given in Paradise have their likes in this world also, except these vessels that are made of silver, but as transparent as a mirror."

Iraqi forces have taken over security control of the central Shia province of Wasit from the US military. This being the 13th of the country's 18 provinces to be returned to Baghdad. Mowaffak al-Rubaie, Iraq's national security adviser, said Wasit had achieved a level of efficiency and ability in civil and security matters.

Rescue efforts have begun after a 6.4 magnitude earthquake in southwestern Pakistan killed more than 170 people. The quake has left more than 15,000 people homeless, with many victims still buried under rubble.

Voters in Zambia are heading to the polls in a tightly-contested election to pick a new president to lead one of the most stable and economically successful countries on the African continent. Today's general election comes almost two months after the previous president, Levy Mwanawasa, died in office following a stroke in June.

Former president Thabo Mbeki's office has written to the ANC saying he has no objection to the ruling party releasing the letter he wrote to ANC president Jacob Zuma. Mbeki is believed to have said that given the selective nature of the disclosure he would have no objection to the letter being released to the public in its entirety. In the letter, Mbeki is said to have distanced himself from the splinter group breaking away from the ANC in order to form a new political party.

Gauteng motorists with traffic fines will breathe a sigh of relief this festive season. The Johannesburg Metro Police Department has announced that it will be cutting fines by half for drivers with outstanding fines. It’s a lucky break for many who are currently on a tight budget, but the same doesn't apply to those in contempt of court as they'll have to pay half of their fine plus an additional amount. More than 4 million fines are outstanding and 1 million more have warrants of arrest. It's hoped motorists will grab the offer and cough up.

Method
Cream the butter and sugar and syrup well. Add the eggs one at a time. Add the flour, spices, and bi carb, dates and nuts. Lastly add the hot water. Bake in moderate oven – 180c for 1 hour in a loaf tin.

OLD COUPLE

While on a road trip, an elderly couple stopped at a roadside restaurant for lunch. After finishing their meal, they left the restaurant, and resumed their trip.When leaving, the elderly woman unknowingly left her glasses on the table,and she didn't miss them until they had been driving about forty minutes. By then, to add to the aggravation, they had to travel quite a distance before they could find a place to turn around, in order to return to the restaurant to retrieve her glasses.

All the way back, the elderly husband became the classic grouchy old man. He fussed and complained, and scolded his wife relentlessly during the entire return drive. The more he chided her, the more agitated he became.

He just wouldn't let up one minute. To her relief, they finally arrived at the restaurant. As the woman got out of the car, and hurried inside to retrieve her glasses, the old geezer yelled to her, 'While you're in there, you might as well get my hat and the credit card.'
