FIQH/PRACTICAL TEACHINGS

MISWAAK

Q. Explain the importance of Miswaak in Wudhu?

A. Although it is not a necessity and Wudhu will be valid in its absence, its due importance cannot be justified in words. Miswaak not being a compulsory act should not be a means of making us negligent of the great act.

Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam said: "If there was no fear of difficulty upon my Ummah I would have ordered them to use Miswaak (make it compulsory) with every Salaah." (Tirmizi, Abu Dawood)

Q. Can a fasting person use Miswaak?

A. Yes a fasting person can use Miswaak.

Aamir Bint Rabiah Radiyallahu Anha narrates that she cannot remember how many times She saw Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam using the Miswaak whilst He was fasting. (Tirmizi)

Q. What are the benefits of Miswaak?

A. The benefits are numerous but just to mention a few:

* It cleanses the mouth
* It sharpens the eyesight
* It pleases Allah
* It is a Sunnah
* It strengthens the gums
* It causes the angels to love one
* It angers Shaytaan

Q. When should Miswaak be used?

A. Miswaak can be used at any time however the Hadeeth makes mention of Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam using Miswaak when sleeping, when awakening, before meals, at the time of Wudhu, upon entering the home and at the time of Tahajjud just to mention a few.

Q. From which tree should the Miswaak be?

A. Allamah Ayni Rahmatullahu Alaihi has written that it is Mustahab to use the Arak twig as a Miswaak. (Muslim Vol 1 pg 127)

Note: Arak refers to a certain type of tree that is bitter in taste. It has a fruit that is somewhat of a resemblance with grapes. Camels usually feed upon these trees.

In the urdu language it is called Pilu.
The most superior Miswaak thereafter is the Miswaak of the Olive tree.

Q. Is the use of Miswaak confined to males only?

A. No, Miswaak is a Sunnah for both males and females.

A THOUGHT

"The world forgives those that make mistakes but ignores and forgets those that did nothing. What you will be remembered for is what you did, not what you could do."

THE SMILE

A man placed some flowers on the grave of his dearly departed mother and started back toward his car when his attention was diverted to another man kneeling at a grave.

The man seemed to be praying with profound intensity and kept repeating, "Why did you have to die? Why did you have to die?"

The first man approached him and said, "Sir, I don't wish to interfere with your private grief, but this demonstration of pain is more than I've ever seen before. For whom do you mourn so deeply? A child? A parent?"

The mourner took a moment to collect himself, then replied, "My wife's first husband."
