THE MESSAGE

Thus We have made you a just nation
(Qur 'an 2: 143)

By Sh Aa'idh al-Qarni

Both your conscience and your Religion demand that you be just, which means that you should neither exaggerate nor understate, neither go into excess nor do too little. Whoever seeks happiness should be just, regardless of whether he is in an angry, a sad, or a joyful mood. Exaggeration in our dealings with others is unacceptable. The best course is the middle course. Whoever follows his desires will likely magnify the importance of any given situation, always making a big deal out of nothing. He will feel jealousy and malice toward others. Since he lives in a world of exaggeration and imagination, he will envisage everyone else to be against him, even to the extent that he feels others to be always conspiring to destroy him. Because of this, he lives under a dark clbud, constantly overcome by fear and apprehension.

Living according to hearsay and superstition is prohibited in our Religion. (They think that every cry is against them.) (Qur'an 63: 4)

More often than not, what you fear will happen in the future does not end up taking place. Here is something you should try: when you fear something, imagine that the worst possible outcome takes place, and then train yourself to feel prepared and contented with that outcome. If you do this, you will find that you have saved yourself from apprehensions and superstitions that would otherwise have caused you much grief.

Lend your attention to each matter in proportion to its importance. In any given situation do not exaggerate mountains from molehills; rather, keep in mind your objectivity and fairness. Do not follow false suspicion or the deceitful illusion of the mirage, but be balanced. Listen to the balance of love and hate as explained by the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him):

"Love the one who is beloved to you in due moderation, for perhaps the day will come when you will abhor him. And hate the one whom you detest in due moderation, for perhaps the day will arrive when you will come to love him." "Perhaps Allah will make friendship between you and those whom you hold as enemies. And Allah has power [over all things], and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.) (Qur 'an 60: 7)

RECIPE

Mutton and Vegetable Stew

30ml cooking oil
2 onions, thinly sliced
600g mutton or lamb, cubed
5 whole cloves
5 whole allspice
5ml salt (or to taste)
10ml crushed, dried red chilies
2, 5 ml grated nutmeg
10ml sugar
500 ml frozen mixed vegetables
150ml water

Method:
Heat oil in large saucepan and braise onions until golden, 5-10 minutes. Add well - washed and drained meat, cover and braise slowly for approximately 30 minutes or until meat is fairly tender. Add cloves, allspice, salt, chillies and nutmeg and cook, uncovered, over high heat for about 10 minutes or until meat has browned well, adding sugar to help the browning. Add frozen mixed vegetables and water and cook, covered, over moderate heat for about 15 minutes. Serve on a bed of white rice.

Variation:
Soak 125 ml sago in 250ml water for 15 minutes. Add to stew after adding frozen vegetables and cook, covered, over low heat until sago is transparent, about 15 minutes. Serve with Mashed potatoes.

A THOUGHT

Imam Shafi'ee (Rahimahullah) said:

"I used to spend time with the pious and wise. Amongst the numerous words of advice I picked up from them, i found two to be extremely relevant and beneficial:

1) Time is a sword. You either take advantage of it by spending it correctly or it will cut you (i.e.; your time will go to waste).

2) If you don't keep yourself occupied with good, you will engage in evil"

(Risalatul Mustarshideen, Pg: 36)

THE SMILE

The school inspector is assigned to the grade 4 class in one of the local schools. He is introduced to the class by the teacher. She says to the class: "Let's show the inspector just how clever you are by allowing him to ask you a question". The inspector reasons that normally class starts with religious instruction, so he will ask a biblical question.

He asks: "Class, who broke down the walls of Jericho?" For a full minute there is absolute silence. The children all just stare at him blankly. Eventually, Little Johnny raises his hand. The inspector excitedly points to him. Little Johnny stands up and replies: "Sir, I do not know who broke down the walls of Jericho, but I can assure you it wasn't me".

Of course, the inspector is shocked by the answer and looks at the teacher for an explanation. Realizing that he is perturbed, the teacher says: "Well, I've known Little Johnny since the beginning of the year, and I believe that if he says that he didn't do it, then he didn't do it. The inspector is even more shocked at this and storms down to the principal's office and tells him what happened, to which the principal replies: I don't know the boy, but I socialize every now and then with his teacher, and I believe her. If she feels that the boy is innocent, then he must be innocent".

The inspector can't believe what he is hearing... He grabs the phone on the principal's desk and in a rage dials the Minister of Education's telephone number and rattles the entire occurrence to him and asks him what he thinks of the education standard in Schools.

The Minister sighs heavily and replies: "I don't know the boy, the teacher nor the principal, but just get three quotes and have the damn wall fixed!!"
