THE STORY

A Guava Tree and Life

by Asma bint Shameem

Mmmm... guavas. I love them. Living in the US, guavas are a rare commodity, a special treat, not just something you can buy every day from the store down the street.

And for many years, since moving to the United States, I was unable to enjoy this sweet blessing of Allaah... until a few years back, when seeing my love for them, my mother found some guava seeds and planted them for me in my backyard. And since then Alhamdulillaah, weve enjoyed ripe, juicy, sweet guavas season after season.

Through storms and hurricanes, cold spells and freezes, this guava tree amazingly withstood the forces of nature against all odds, Alhamdulillaah, and produced ripe, delicious fruit... until last winter.

This last winter was particularly long and cold, and I watched in dismay, as the leaves on my guava tree first turned red, then yellow to brown and then gray. One by one, all of them fell off until there was nothing left but dry, withered, empty branches. Not a single leaf left on them. I thought I had lost my guava tree.

And ever since winter was over, I would look out my window every single day, hoping to see some life, some greenery... maybe just a leaf or two, but... nothing.

No more guavas, I thought.

My guava tree was dead.

But this morning, as I casually glanced outside my window, my eyes took a double take.

What was that I think saw?! Could it be?!! Do I dare hope?!!

I quickly went outside to reconfirm what I was hoping for all this while.

And yes, sure enough, there it was. A few small green leaves, sprouting from bare, seemingly dead, totally empty branches.

Allaahu Akbar!

My guava tree was living again!

After I had given up, after I had thought it was gone, Allaah, the One who created this tree in the first place, had brought it back to life!

And as I rejoiced over the 'rebirth' of my guava tree, an Ayah from the Qur'aan echoed in the back of my head.

"And a sign for them is the dead land. We gave it life, and We brought forth from it, grains, so that they eat thereof." (Surah Yaseen: 33)

A sign, Allaah says. What is this sign... I thought to my self? And then it hit me. read more

SUNNAH, (PRACTISES OF MUHAMMAD Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam)

Abdullah bin sa'd Radiyallahu 'Anhu says: "I enquired from Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam, is it more meritorious to perform Nafil Salaah in the home or in the Masjid? Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Aayhi Wasallam replied: 'Do you observe that my house is so near the Masjid (which does not make it difficult, or cause a hindrance in coming to the Masjid, in spite of all this) I prefer to perform the Salaah, besides the Faraa-id, in my house, rather than in the Masjid." [TIRMIZI]

Commentary: As the Nawaafil are based on concealment, therefore it is better to perform it in the home, to ensure complete concealment. It keeps away from show and pretence. But certainly, it is undesirable that the Faraa-id be concealed. More Ajr (Thawaab-reward) is gained by performing it in the Masjid. Included are also the Rak'ahs performed after Tawaaf of the Ka'bah, Salaatut Taraweeh etc. Although the Taraweeh is not from the Faraa-id it is a peculiar feature of Ramadhaan, and is Masnun to perform in Jamaa'ah (congregation). Likewise is every Salaah performed with Jamaa'ah like Salaah of Kusuf (solar eclipse prayer), which are meant to be publicly declared. Therefore it is desirable to perform these in the Masjid.

HEALTH TIPs

Become a highly disciplined time manager. There are roughly 168 hours in a week. This surely allows plenty of time for achievement of the many goals we desire to accomplish.

Be ruthless with your time. Set aside a few minutes each morning to plan your day. Plan around your priorities and focus on not only those tasks which are immediate but not important (i.e., many telephone calls) but especially on those which are important but not urgent, for these allow for the greatest personal and professional development.

Important but not immediate activities are those which produce long-term, sustainable benefits and include exercise, strategic planning, the development of relationships and professional education. Never let the things which matter most be placed in the backseat as compared to those that matter least.

THE SMILE

What is it about you?

At the company water cooler, I bragged about my children's world travels: one son was teaching in Bolivia, another was working in southern Italy, and my daughter was completing a yearlong research project in India.

One co-worker's quip, however, stopped me short. "What is it about you," he asked, "that makes your kids want to get so far away?"
