SOMETHING TO PONDER OVER...

The following was extracted from the Al Mahmood Q. and A. newsletter.

Q. How do we explain to non - Muslims that making Dhikr and taking the name of Allah brings peace to the heart?

A. Vander Hoven, a non - Muslim Dutch psychologist announced his discovery about the effect of repeating the word Allah on patients. After research and observations over a period of three years, his patients, Muslims an non - Muslims, particularly those who suffer tension and anxiety were trained to recite the word Allah. The A (Alif) of Allah is released from the respiratory system, thus controls breathing. The L (Laam) touches the upper jaw and produces a short pause. The repetition of that pause by pronouncing the L (Laam) again relaxes aspiration. The pronouncing of the H (Haa) of Allah creates a contact between the lung and the heart which controls the heart beat.

A non - Muslim should also be advised that merely reciting the name of Allah is not sufficient. Believing in Allah and His injunctions is necessary.

FIQH (PRACTICAL ASPECTS)

SAJDAH TILAAWAT

Q. Explain what is Sajdah Tilaawat?
A. According to the Hanafi Mazhab there are 14 such verses of the Holy Quraan when read, A Sajdah becomes compulsory for the reader as well as the listener. In most Quraans these verses are marked with the word Sajdah written on the side of the page.

Q. What is the method of performing this Sajdah?
A. According to the Hanafi Mazhab, a person has to simply go into Sajdah from a standing or sitting position, recite the Tasbeehaat that is recited in regular Salaah and come back up. There is no Qiraat, Takbeer or Salaam that has to be performed.

Q. Is it necessary to perform this Sajdah immediately after the verse is read?
A. No, it is not necessary to perform it immediately although it will be better to adopt the safer route and perform it immediately to be saved from forgetting. A common practice is to perform fourteen Sajdahs at one time after the completion of the recitation of the Holy Quraan.

Q. What is the ruling regarding a person who is repeating the same verse in one sitting?
A. If a person is repeating the same verse in one sitting then he/she will only have to perform one Sajdah. However if different Sajdah verses are recited in one sitting then the person will have to perform a Sajdah for every verse.

1-2 green peppers (cut small- in 3 cm cubes)
3 mealies on cob (cut small - in 3 cm pieces)
3 - 4 baby marrows (cut small - 3 cm slices)
1/4 kg beans (cut French style)
1 cup peas
1/2 cabbage (shredded)
1 Large tomato (grated)
1 d.spoon ginger
1/2 d.spoon garlic
3/4 d. spoon red chillie powder
1d.spoon dhana jeeru
1/4 d.spoon arad
1/2 d.spoon salt
1 1/2 cup sour milk
3 beetroot (cut in quarters & boil separately- until well cooked - drain)

Method:
Clean and cut chicken into small pieces. Slice onion (not very thinly). Place all the washed and drained chicken, veg, spices and sour milk in a large dish. Toss around well until spices coat meat and veg well. Fry onion in about 3 -4 tbsp ghee or oil. Add some taj, lavang, pepper- corn. Add all the chicken, veg to pot and cook on low heat 2-3 hours, until chicken and veg are well cooked, being careful not to squash veg while stirring. Add more spices if desired. If meat is used, it should be cooked a while before add-ing vegetables. Avoid stirring too often.

HANDY HINT

When your jug gets that horrible water stain on the inside add some bi carb and boil the jug. it will come up like brand new. You have to repeat the process a couple of times for larger amounts of build up.

Then look forward to a nice clean fresh cup of tea as reward for your effort.

PS don't forget to rinse it out!!

THE SMILE

One afternoon, a man was riding in the back of his limousine when he noticed two men eating grass by the road side. He ordered his driver to stop and he got out to investigate. "Why are you eating grass?" he asked one man. "We don't have any money for food," the poor man replied. "Oh, come along with me then." the man from the limousine said excitedly. "But sir, I have a wife with two children!" "Bring them along! And you, come with us too!" he said to the other man. "But sir, I have a wife with six children!" the second man answered. "Bring them as well!" So, they all climbed into the car, which was no easy task, even for a vehicle as large as the limousine. One of the poor fellows expressed his gratitude, "Sir, you are too kind. Thank you for taking all of us with you." The rich man replied, "No, thank you... the grass at my place is about three feet tall and I could use the help!"
