Superstition

Superstition constituted an integral part of the belief system of the pagans. Prior to the advent of Islam the Arabs were steeped in superstitious beliefs, beliefs that regulated their social, economic and political activity. Superstition created a mysterious value system that gave rise to fear, suspicion and enmity. It deprived man of rational thinking and every ailment, accident or calamity was attributed to some evil force bent on destroying their lives.

The Month of Safar

The month of Safar is regarded as a month of ill-fortune and bad luck. The pre-Islamic Arabs believed Safar to be a serpent that dwells in the stomach of man. It stirs to life in this month and causes various types of illnesses and diseases. Thus people are more prone to fall ill in this month. Because of the various evil omens attached to this month some Muslims regard:

* Nikaah contracted in this month to be bad luck and ill-fated.
* Any important business venture initiated in this month bound to collapse.
* The first thirteen days of this month to be specifically evil and bad luck.

Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam condemned such superstitious beliefs in various Ahadeeth.

A Hadeeth narrated in Muslim states: "There is no (ill-fortune) in the month of Safar nor do evil spirits(exist)"

Another Hadeeth states: "Do not revile time (i.e. do not regard any particular day, week or month to be bad, for I (Allah) am the (embodiment) of all time"

Fortunetellers

There are certain impostors who pretend to know the future through contact with the "spirits". The Holy Qur'aan rejects the notion that anyone besides Allah knows the future in the following verse: "Say - No one in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allah".

Horoscopes and Astrology

The Pagan Arabs used three arrows to ascertain whether they should proceed with a task or not. The words "My Lord has commanded me" were inscribed on one arrow; "My Lord has forbidden me" inscribed on the second arrow and the third arrow was left blank.

If they planned a journey, or a marriage or to raid the enemy, etc., they would go to the temple and draw out an arrow. If they drew the arrow with the positive inscription they would proceed with their plans. The negative inscription meant that they should abort their plans. A blank arrow meant that they should repeat the process till they received a clear directive.

This practice is akin to modern day horoscopes, astrology, palm reading and other similar practices. Islam prohibits all such practices and considers them sinful. The same prohibiton applies to hanging charms, beads and amulets, in the belief that they will protect the bearer from evil spirits, bad luck or the evil eye.

The Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam stated: "May Allah not fulfill the hopes of the one who wears a charm; may Allah not protect the one who hangs seashells (used as a charm in those days)". (Ahmed)

Conclusion

Islam is not a religion based on superstitious dogma. To attribute every ailment, calamity and hardship to "evil spirits" is to be a defeatist. We ultimately become the victims of suspicion, hatred and fear. We become blind to our own weaknesses and shortcomings and simply attribute all our ills to some external forces. If we ourselves have set our garden on fire with our own hands, why do we complain against the enemy. No one is our enemy except our own selves. Fie upon us that we proved to be the enemies of our own selves.

FIQH

SUNNAT SALAAH

Q. What is Sunnat Salaah?

A. Sunnat Salaah are those Salaahs that do not fall in the category of Fardh meaning it is not compulsory however its due importance should be given because Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam emphasized on it.

Q. Mention the types and define them?

A. There are two types of Sunnat Salaah: 1) Mu'akkada 2) Ghair Mu'akkada. The word "Mu'akkada" means "emphasized upon" thus Mu'akkada would mean that Sunnat Salaah which was emphasized upon and Ghair Mu'akkada would mean those that were also stressed upon however comparatively it was given less importance.

Q. Which Sunnat Rakaats fall under which category?

A. Fajr: 2 Sunnat before Fardh (Mu'akkada).
Zuhr: 4 Sunnat before Fardh (Mu'akkada), 2 Sunnat after Fardh (Mu'akkada)
Asr: 4 Sunnat before Fardh (Ghair Mu'akkada)
Maghrib: 2 Sunnat after Fardh (Mu'akkada)
Esha: 4 Sunnat before Fardh (Ghair Mu'akkada), 2 Sunnat after Fardh (Mu'akkada)

Q. Does a person read half the Sunnat Rakaats when travelling as in the case of the Fardh Salaah?

A. No, a person will not read half. If he finds the time when travelling then he should read the complete Sunnat Rakaats along with half of the Fardh Rakaats. If he does not find time or it is very difficult for him then he is permitted to leave his Sunnat Rakaats.

Q. Is there Qadhaa for Sunnat Rakaats? ( Qadhaa = To complete Salaah that one has missed in the past)

A. No, there is no Qadhaa Salaah for the Sunnat Rakaats. However Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam stressed the most upon the 2 Sunnat Rakaats of Fajr and there are some reports that Qadhaa for the 2 Sunnah Rakaats* of Fajr can be made.

* There are a lot of conditions, details, and difference of opinion regarding Qadhaa for the 2 Sunnah Rakaats of Fajr. Contact a reliable Aalim for the explanation in accordance with your school of thought (Mazhab).

THE SMILE

Mr. Banuchie walks into a bank in Johannesburg and asks for the loans dept. He says he's going to Europe on business for three weeks and needs to borrow R10,000. The bank officer says the bank will need some kind of security for the loan, so Mr. Banuchie hands over the keys to a new Rolls Royce. The car is parked on the street in front of the bank, he has the papers and everything checks out. The bank agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan. The bank manager and its staff all enjoy a good laugh at Mr. Banuchie for using a R500,000 Rolls as collateral against a R10,000 loan. An employee of the bank then proceeds to drive the Rolls into the bank's underground garage and parks it there. Two weeks later, Mr. Banuchie returns, repays the R10,000 and the interest, which comes to R141.66.

The bank manager says, "Sir, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multimillionaire. What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow R10,000?" Mr. Banuchie replies... "Where else in Johannesburg can I park my car for two weeks for only R141.66 and expect it to be there when I return?"
