THE FRIDAY SERMON

KNOWLEDGE

All praise be to Allah, the noblest who has created man and elevated him, and has taught him speech which he knew not. Glory be to Him whose bounties are innumerable, neither can they be counted by tongue nor by pen.

We bear witness that there is no God besides Allah. He has no partner and we bear witness that our Leader and Master, Muhammed Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam is His servant and prophet who has been given the attributes of comprehensive speech, distinguishing wisdom and excellent character. May Allah Ta'aala send blessings upon Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam, onhis family and his Companions, the stars of guidance for the Ummah. Indeed knowledge of Islamic Law and jurisprudence is the most major of Islamic obligations. (We are thus encouraged to learn and teach it)

Mu'ath bin Jabal Radiyallahu anhu narrated that Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam said the following: "Acquire knowledge, for surely it leads to fear of Allah. Seeking it is an act of worship ('Ibadah); studying it is praising Allah; seeking it is Jihad; teaching it to whomever doesn't known it is an act of charity (Sadaqah); and giving it to its people draws one closer to them. Knowledge points to the permissible (Halaal) and the forbidden (Haraam); and it is a shining light pointing the way to paradise It comforts the lonely, befriends the estranged, and talks to you in seclusion. It is a guide through prosperity and adversity; it is a weapon against enemies; and it is the best of friends. With knowledge, Alláh raises people to high stations, making them leaders in goodness, whose steps are traced. Their example is emulated, their opinion followed. The angels like to sit with the people of knowledge, surrounding their wings; and everything dry or wet, -fish of the sea and animals on land, - will ask Allah to forgive them. Knowledge gives life to the heart in the midst of ignorance, and illumines vision in the darkness. With knowledge, God's servants become the elite and reach the highest degrees in this life and in the hereafter. Contemplation with knowledge is equivalent to fasting (Sawm); spending time to study it is equivalent to standing at night in prayer (Qiyaam); duties to relatives are fulfilled by it; and through it the Halaal and Haraam are known. Knowledge precedes action ('Amal) and action always follows it. The fortunate ones attain it and the miserable ones are deprived of it."

Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam has said: "The seeking of knowledge is obligatory for every Muslim."

Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam has said: "One who treads a path in search of knowledge has his path to Paradise made easy by Allah…"

Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam has said: "Allah, His angels and all those in Heavens and on Earth, even ants in their hills and fish in the water, call down blessings on those who instruct others in beneficial knowledge."

Allah Ta'aala, the Exalted, says:

"And say: `My Rabb! Increase me in knowledge.'' (20:114)

"Are those who know equal to those who know not?''' (39:9)

"Allah will exalt in degree those of you who believe, and those who have been granted knowledge.'' (58:11)

"It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allah.'' (35:28)

DUA (PRAYER)

Dua to be read on a cold day

"Laa ilaaaha illallahu maa ashadda barda haathal yawmi Allahumma ajirni min zamhareera jahannam"

There is no God besides Allah Ta'ala how servere is the cold of this day. O' Allah save me from the cold of Jahannam.

The cold weather of winter should remind one of the ‘burning cold' of Jahannam. Ibn Abbaas Radiyallahu Anhu says, "The inmates of Jahannam will ask to be rescued from the excruciating heat of Jahannam. An icy cold wind will be blown upon them, which will cause their bones to ache after which they will beg for heat again."

Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam is reported to have said, "When a person recites the above Dua, Allah Ta'aala says to Jahannam, ‘Indeed, a servant of mine has sought refuge in me from you, bear testimony that I have granted him salvation from you."

THE SMILE (True stories)

DOES MEDICAL HELP LIE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE LAW....

23-06-11 A US man held up a bank and demanded just one dollar - because he wanted to go to prison to get medical care. After the robbery, Richard Verone, 59, waited inside the bank for the police to come and arrest him. He told police that he staged the raid in Gastonia, North Carolina, because it was the only way he could get health treatment. Jobless Verone said he was suffering from an undiagnosed growth in his chest, two ruptured back discs, and a problem with his foot.

He had presented a cashier at the RBC bank with a note explaining that he didn't want to scare anybody but he was robbing the bank and wanted just $1. After receiving the dollar, Verone told the teller: "I'll be sitting right over here on the chair waiting for the police." When they arrived, the police found him sitting on a sofa inside the bank. "I'm sort of a logical person and that was my logic," Verone said. "If it is called manipulation, then out of necessity because I need medical care, then I guess I am manipulating the courts to get medical care." Verone did not use a weapon during his robbery and said he would like a three-year sentence, though he probably will not serve more than 12 months.

OR IS IT ON THE STREETS...

22-06-11 A Potchefstroom woman is claiming her visually impaired son can see better after being hit by a taxi. Seven-year-old Gerhard van der Merwe was almost blind in his right eye until being hit two weeks ago by a taxi outside his parents' house in Potchefstroom, North West, his mother, Gretha van der Merwe, was quoted as saying.

"The boy has been wearing glasses since the age of nine months after being born with a visual impairment. He could barely distinguish light and dark with his right eye, but this all changed after the taxi accident. He did not see the taxi. He flew 12 metres through the air" said Van der Merwe.

The boy was hospitalised with an eye injury and a light concussion. "In hospital he kept saying to us, he can see. His right eye was swollen so I thought he meant that the swelling was going down. But he kept saying it." She said she took him to an eye doctor and he could suddenly read "from the biggest letter to the smallest letter on the eye chart". Van der Merwe insists Gerhard's improved vision was a miracle.
