ORION ‘MEATS’ AN APPROPRIATE INTERDICT
A ruling in the Cape High court on Friday, 18 November 2011 that halted a Cape town based meat distributing company from its fraudulent activities was indeed a reminder to the Muslims of South Africa, nay, the world, of what power and weight we hold in the eyes of authority when all voices “Sing the same song”.
This comes after the Cape based company is alleged to have been importing Irish and Belgian pork products, re-labelling them as Halaal and distributing it to manufacturers and wholesalers.
Radio Islam International echoed the court hearing that very evening as many interesting facts were unearthed. The programme was hosted by Ml. Sajjaad Timol with Ml. Saeed Navlakhi of Sanha, Ml Ebrahim Adam of the MJC and Patrick Gaertner, Managing Director of the Cape based company, Orion Cold Storage, voicing their cases.
“We wanted the court to issue an order preventing them, by virtue of (an) interdict, from all those fraudulent and criminal practices that they were involved in” said Sanha’s Ml. Navlakhi.
Ml. Navlakhi stated that initially when this horrific story rocked South Africa, the company denied any actions of this nature currently taking place on the premises. However, when further developments worked against their favour, the Cape based company, in an attempt to escape the uproar of a common voice said that such actions were done by business associates outside the premises of Orion Cold storage in an attempt to sabotage the company.
“When the evidence was presented to them, they then immediately in their replying affidavit started conceding and saying that we did not do this, this was done without our consent” said Ml. Navlakhi.
Although the company threw the blame of re-labelling pork and kangarro meat on the so-called business associates working outside the premises, they did concede to other acts with rather weak points to strengthen their case as was mentioned by the senior of the South African National Halaal Authority.
“They accepted that they re-labelled the animal feed powder to skim milk powder based on that the product was fit for human consumption”
“They also conceded to applying a Halaal logo to poultry that was imported from Europe on the basis that that particular poultry plant is Halaal, so we (Orion Cold Storage) took the liberty of applying our own computerized Halaal stamp”

Chicken (with skin) one whole (about 8 big pieces)
Marination:
6 Tbsp Lemon Juice
2 Tbsp Soya Sauce
1 tsp Salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 1/2 Tbsp paprika
1 1/2 Garlic Paste
1 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
2 Tbsp oil
1 tsp meat tenderizer
1 Tbsp hot peri peri sauce
Method: Marinate chicken pieces in the above ingredients for at least 2 - 4 hours. Preheat grill. Grill chicken for 1/2 hour on medium grill and then 15 more minutes on low heat. Chicken should be tender and properly grilled before serving.
