With the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Very-Merciful

“A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall” [1] “Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert” [2] “And is from Allah, the Controller of the staircase” [3]

Today’s lesson starts off a new Surah from the Quraan. One miracle that could be found in the Quraan and the speech of Nabi Sallallahu alaihi wa Sallam is the fact that it keeps the reader/listener suspended between hope and fear. It does not give a person so much hope that he/she neglects making effort, on the other hand it (Quraan and Hadeeth) does not make a person fear so much that they lose hope. This surah could be summarized in this manner. It speaks of punishment in the hereafter but also makes mention of glad tidings for those that will thread the correct path.

COMMENTARY: As was common throughout history, the disbelievers would always mockingly ask when will the punishment come down. The first verse makes mention of a sarcastic question asked regarding the punishment. It is as if they requested the punishment in order to make the Prophet of the time look like a mad man. However, the word “Waaqi” in verse 1 is translated as ‘about to befall’ which means that the punishment is prepared and waiting. The second verse speaks indirectly of Allah’s power and might. It states that when the decision is made for a punishment to befall a nation, no one can stop or prevent the punishment. There is no obstacle mighty enough to stop it. We should put these verses in our daily lives and understand that whether good or ‘bad’, if Allah has decreed it, it can never be stopped. The reason why the word ‘bad’ is in inverted commas is because nothing is done to harm us. If a condition seems ‘bad’, there is always a reason for it.A reason that will benefit us immediately or later on in life. Verse 3 makes it clear that this punishment (and all conditions weather good or bad) is from Allah alone. Allah Ta’aala uses the word ‘Controller of the staircase’. The Staircase would mean the skies for the angels use it to ascend to the heavens and descend on earth.

A 64-year-old Japanese man in a blonde wig robbed a Tokyo cake shop of nearly $10 000 before being brought down by store staff armed with laundry poles. The jobless man used a survival knife to force an 18-year-old member of staff to hand over the cash. A British mother-of-two has told how her life was saved in a car crash - by a loaf of bread, a report has said. The medium-sliced £1.15 Hovis Soft White flew from Liz Douglas's shopping bag and cushioned her head when her car hit a telegraph pole. Her Nissan Note flipped over and was a write-off - but she escaped with minor cuts and bruises, the report said. Douglas, 51, of Stronachlachar, Stirling, said: “It stopped my head hitting the top of the car, and saved my life. She has kept the bread loaf as a reminder. – IOL

THIS DRIVER WASN'T SO LUCKY...

Responsible for getting dozens of pupils to school safely, he should have been concentrating on the road ahead. But a British bus driver was in fact far too busy completing a Sudoku puzzle at the wheel to give the job his full attention. The unidentified driver has been sacked after one of his young passengers took a picture of him completing the number game while transporting a bus full of children, aged between nine and 16, through early morning rush hour traffic.

The 12-year-old pupil, who took the photograph on his mobile phone, said the driver was filling in the answers inside the puzzle book, which was resting on the steering wheel. “My son was on that bus and the safety of the children has got to come first. He said the driver had his pen out and his head down while the coach was moving, doing Sudoku. It was in traffic so it probably wasn’t at a high speed, but it was definitely moving.” The pupil's mother said. ~Daily Mail~
