THE MESSAGE
The Hadith is narrated by Abdullah bin Mas'ood Radhi-Allahu anhu, who mentions that Rasulullah Sallallahu aalayhi wasallam said: (Allah Ta'ala will grant prosperity throughout the year to the person who spends freely on his family on the day of ashura) Tabrani, Bayhaqi and Abu Sheikh have all narrated this Hadith from Abdullah bin Mas'ood Radhi-Allahu aanhu.

Another virtue of Muharram is that the fasts during this month are second in excellence only to the fasts of Ramadhaan. Although every day and every month belongs to Allah Ta'ala, Rasulullah Sallallahu aalayhi wasallam has mentioned that Muharram is Allah's month. By saying this, Rasulullah Sallallahu alayhi wasallam intended to emphasise the added auspiciousness of this month.

Abu Hurayra Radhi-Allahu aanhu reports that Rasulullah Sallallahu aalayhi wasallam said: 'After the fasts of Ramadhaan, the best fasts are those observed during Allah's month of Muharram.' Ali Radhi-Allahu anhu narrates that he was once sitting with Rasulullah Sallallahu aalayhi wasallam when a person asked, 'O Rasulullah Sallallahu aalayhi wasallam! Besides the month of Ramadhaan, in which month would you advise me to fast?' Rasulullah Sallallahu aalayhi wasallam replied, 'If you wish to fast in any month after Ramadhaan, then fast in the month of Muharram because this is Allah's month. It has a day in which Allah Ta'ala had accepted the repentance of a nation and in which Allah Ta'ala will accept the repentance of others also.’ The nation whose Taubah (repentance) was accepted on a day in this month was the Bani Israeel. It was on the 10th of Muharram (ashura) that the Bani Israeel and Moosa Alayhis-Salam were saved from Firaaun and his army.

Some Ulema are of the opinion that the month of Muharram has been given prominence because of the day of ashura. Others even say that when the Ahadith speak about the virtue of Muharram, they actually refer to the day of ashura and not the entire month of Muharram. Therefore, in their estimation, it is only the fast of the day of ashura that has special virtue and not the fasts of the entire month of Muharram. The details of this can be found in the book Arfush Shazia which is a commentary of Tirmidhi. read more

The Fast of the Day of Ashura (10th of Muharram)

The 10th of Muharram is a significant day in Islamic history. Rasulullah Sallallahu aalayhi wasallam used to fast on this day and commanded the Sahaabah Radhi-Allahu aanhum also to fast. The fast of this day was initially Wajib (compulsory), but the compulsion was waived when the fasts of Ramadhaan were made Fardh. The Muslims then had a choice to either fast on this day or not to fast. However, the virtues of this fast have been expounded in the Ahadith. Among these is the virtue that the previous year’s sins are forgiven.

Initially, the Muslims only fasted on the 10th but before his demise, Rasulullah Sallallahu aalayhi wasallam mentioned that if he were alive the next year, he would fast on the 9th as well. Sadly, Rasulullah Sallallahu aalayhi wasallam did not live to see the following Muharram. It is therefore necessary for Muslims to fast on the 9th and 10th of Muharram or on the 10th and 11th. Because certain narrations mention that one should fast a day before Ashura and a day after, it is best for a Muslim to fast on the 9th, 10th and 11th of Muharram (three days). However, to fast on only the 10th is Makrooh Tanzihi (i.e. an act disliked by the Shariah).

As Technology Progresses Family Unit Regresses – Ml Ahmed Akoo

In this crucial discussion, Ml Ahmed Akoo mentioned that every person is aware of whom an orphan is and even the most hard-hearted person would soften toward an orphan. However, as technology evolves, the world gives birth to new orphans called, The Modern Day Orphan. Due to techno gadget addiction by parents, children are robbed of their right of parental care, nurturing and love. Moulana mentioned that, in most homes, the family unit no longer exists.

Referring to an article Moulana read; when a teacher asked her students what they would love to be the most in their lives, she was moved to tears by one response: ‘I wish I was a TV so that my parents would look at me and I’d be able to keep them company’. Other kids might say, ‘I’d like to be an iPhone or Blackberry, then only would I receive my parents attention.’ Even though the family sits together, everybody is in another place, in their own cyber world...

Moulana quoted a verse from Al Qur’an wherein Allah says, ‘It is Allah who made your dwellings a place of Peace, a dwelling of Comfort, a dwelling of Love.’ Is this what we derive from our homes? With many challenges in society, Moulana urged each parent to take Parenting, an Amaanah from Allah, seriously in order to contribute positively to society by producing well-bred, pious children. Allah honoured parents with a high status because of the responsibility attached to this honour viz. loving and nurturing of their kids… Listen

THE SMILE
CATCHING FISH

Jim had an awful day fishing on the lake, sitting in the blazing sun all day without catching a single one. On his way home, he stopped at the supermarket and ordered four catfish. He told the fish salesman, "Pick four large ones out and throw them at me, will you?"

"Why do you want me to throw them at you?"

"Because I want to tell my wife that I caught them."

"Okay, but I suggest that you take the salmon."

"But why?"

"Because your wife came in earlier today and said that if you came by, I should tell you to take salmon. She prefers that for supper tonight."
