THE MESSAGE

THE 'CHAPPATIS '(A flat bread)

A woman baked Chappatis for members of her family and an extra one for a hungry passerby. She kept the extra chappati on the window-sill, for whosoever would take it away. Everyday, a hunchback came and took away the chappati. Instead of expressing gratitude, he muttered the following words as he went his way: "The evil you do, remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!" This went on, day after day.

Everyday, the hunch-back came, picked up the chappati and uttered the words:
"The evil you do, remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!"

The woman felt irritated. "Not a word of gratitude," she said to herself.
"Everyday this hunchback utters this jingle! What does he mean?"

One day, exasperated, she decided to do away with him. "I shall get rid of this hunchback, "she said. And what did she do? She added poison to the chappati she prepared for him! As she was about to keep it on the window sill, her hands trembled.

"What is this I am doing?" she said. Immediately, she threw the chapati into the fire, prepared another one and kept it on the window- sill. As usual, the hunchback came, picked up the chappati and muttered the words: "The evil you do, remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!" The hunchback proceeded on his way, blissfully unaware of the war raging in the mind of the woman.

Everyday, as the woman placed the chappati on the window-sill, she offered a prayer for her son who had gone to a distant place to seek his fortune. For many months, she had no news of him. She prayed for his safe return.

That evening, there was a knock on the door. As she opened it, she was surprised to find her son standing in the doorway. He had grown thin and lean. His garments were tattered and torn. He was hungry, starved and weak. As he saw his mother, he said, "Mom, it's a miracle I'm here. While I was but a mile away, I was so famished that I collapsed. I would have died, but just then an old hunchback passed by. I begged of him for a morsel of food, and he was kind enough to give me a whole chappati. As he gave it to me, he said, "This is what I eat everyday: today, I shall give it to you, for your need is greater than mine!"

As the mother heard those words, her face turned pale. She leaned against the door for support. She remembered the poisoned chappati that she had made that morning. Had she not burnt it in the fire, it would have been eaten by her own son, and he would have lost his life! It was then that she realized the significance of the words:

"The evil you do, remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!"

Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam has said: "Keep Allah in mind wherever you are; follow a wrong with a right that offsets it; and treat people courteously" [Hadith narrated by At-Tirmithi]

FIQH

SALAATUL ISTIKHAARA

Q. what is Salaatul Istikhaarah?
A. Salaatul Istikhaarah is a type of Nafl (optional) Salaah that has been prescribed to us by Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam when a decision has to be made.

Q. Explain the method of performing Salaatul Istikhaara?
A. A person should perform 2 Rakaats of Nafl Salaah before sleeping. After the performance of 2 Rakaats of Salaah, one should read the Dua for Istikhaara.

Q. What is the meaning of the dua?
A. The meaning is as follows:
"O Allah I beg you for the good through your knowledge and ability through your power; I beg (your favours) out of your infinite bounty; for you have power and I have none, you know and I know not and you are the great knower of the hidden things. O Allah if in your knowledge this matter is good for my religion Deen, for my livelihood and for the consequence of my affairs then ordain it (decree it) for me and make it easy for me and bless me therein; but if in your knowledge this matter is bad for my Deen, for my livelihood and for the consequence of my affairs then it away from me and turn me away from it and ordain for me the good wherever it be, and cause me to be pleased with it."

When the words "This matter" is uttered, one should contemplate on the matter about which guidance is sought.

Q. How will one know the result of Istikhaara?
A. A person will find a decision set firmly in ones heart on awakening after the first night. If the heart is not set on anything after the first night, the Istikhaara should be done continuously for 3, 5 or 7 nights. If the Istikhaara is done in the proper manner, some firm thought will set upon the heart by the 7th night.

Q. Is it possible to get your answer via a dream?
A. Yes it is possible to get the correct decision via a dream, however it is not necessary for this to happen. It is a common misconception in today’s time that a dream is necessary.

THE SMILE
An Illinois man left the snowballed streets of Chicago for a vacation in Florida. His wife was on a business trip and was planning to meet him there the next day. When he reached his hotel, he decided to send his wife a quick e-mail.

Unable to find the scrap of paper on which he had written her e-mail address, he did his best to type it in from memory. Unfortunately, he missed one letter, and his note was directed instead to an elderly preacher's wife whose husband had passed away only the day before. When the grieving widow checked her e-mail, she took one look at the monitor, let out a piercing scream, and fell to the floor dead.

At the sound, her family rushed into the room and saw this note on the screen:

Dearest Wife,

Just got checked in. Everything prepared for your arrival tomorrow.

Your Loving Husband.

P.S. Sure is hot down here.
