One day Hasan visited Habib. Habib placed two rounds of bread and a little salt before Hasan. Hasan began to eat. A beggar came to the door, and Habib gave the two rounds and the salt to him.

“Habib,” remarked to the astonished Hasan, “you are a worthy man. If only you had some knowledge, it would be better. You took the bread from under the nose of your guest and gave it all to the beggar. You ought to have given a part to the beggar and a part to the guest.”

Habib said nothing. A servant entered with a tray on his head. A roast lamb was on the tray, together with sweetmeat and fine bread, and five hundred silver Dirhams. He set the tray before Habib. Habib gave the money to the poor, and placed the tray before his guest, Hasan.

“Master,” he said when Hasan had eaten some of the roast, “you are a good man. If only you had a little faith, it would be better. Knowledge must be accompanied by faith.”

COMMENTARY: We gather from this that if there are many things in a plate, then it is permissible to take a thing which one likes from the other side of the plate, provided the next person does not feel offended. The reason for searching for pieces of gourd is because it was the custom to have more gravy in the curry. Sayyidina Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam also advised us to have more gravy in the curry so that the neighbours may also benefit.

Ingredients :
4 large gem squash
20ml oil
1 onion – sliced
400g steak mince
1 tsp salt
4 cloves
2 tsp crushed garlic
1 green chilli – chopped
1x410g can baked beans in tomato

Method :
- Heat oil in a saucepan. Add onion and braise until golden brown.
- Wash and drain mince in a colander, then add to saucepan with salt, cloves, garlic and chilli.
- Cook for thirty minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Add beans and cook a further 10 minutes until well blended.
- Meanwhile, halve squash and remove seeds
- Stuff squash with mince and bean mixture, leaving some gravy in saucepan.
- Place squash in saucepan and steam, covered, for 15 minutes.
- Serve with white rice.
