A couple were once seated for meals. Suddenly a knock was heard at the door from a beggar standing outside. The husband in a fit of rage approached the beggar, scolded him and chased him away. As time passed it so happened that this wealthy man became poor. He lost his entire empire and eventually even ended up divorcing his wife.
Life continued. She remarried and now was seated for meals with her new husband. Again a knock was heard at the door from a beggar. Her husband told her: “Take this food which was prepared for us and give it to the beggar outside.” She did as he instructed her but she returned crying. She replied: “The beggar outside was my previous husband.” Then she related to him the entire incident which transpired between her previous husband and his abuse to that beggar. Her new husband then told her: “By the qasm of Allah, I am that very same beggar.” (Al Mustatraf vol 1 pg 24)
Lesson: If you have been blessed with prosperity and ease, never regard it as your achievement. Also, do not look down upon those who are less fortunate or treat them with pride and arrogance. Instead, be humble and grateful to Allah Ta’ala and treat His creation with compassion and kindness. Otherwise, the tables could turn.
Commentary:
Some Ulama have translated this also as watermelon’ instead of musk-melon,
the reason being, that the cold effect is intended. The reason for eating
dates is also that it gives the melon a sweeter taste. It is not necessary
that one’s benefit be gauged everywhere. It is possible that this
is due to some other benefits. The eating of watermelon with dates has
its own benefit and that is to create evenness in the effect of both,
so that it becomes mild. The eating of musk-melon with dates has its own
benefit and that is that if the melon is insipid and tasteless, many a
time, due to it being insipid sugar is mixed before it is eaten. Therefore
it is not necessary to give the same reasons for both watermelon and musk-melon.

SPICED CUBED STEAK WITH SAVOURY RICE
Ingredients
1kg Cubed Steak - 7 ml Salt to taste - 1 = tsps ground Dhania - 1 tsp
Ground Jeero - 1 tsp crushed dired red chillies - 3 tsps plain Ginger/Garlic
- 3 whole cloves - 3 whole allspice - 3 cardomon seeds (elachi) - 2 pieces
stick cinnamon - A few strands of Saffron - 50ml Sunflower Oil - 3 large
onions thinly sliced - 1 large ripe tomato grated or finely chopped.
Method
Combine all the spices and toss with meat. Heat oil in a large saucepan
add onions and braise until golden. Add meat and spices and cook covered
on medium heat until tender. Add tomato and cook a further 15 minutes
adding a pinch of sugar if desired. Serve hot on a bed of savory rice.
