PERSONALITY

ADI IBN HATIM RA

In the ninth year of the Hijra, an Arab king made the first positive moves to Islam after years of feeling hatred for it. He drew closer to faith (Iman) after opposing and combating it. And he finally pledged allegiance to the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam, after his adamant refusal to do so.

He was Adiyy, son of the famous Hatim at-Taai who was known far and wide for his chivalry and fabulous generosity. Adiyy inherited the domain of his father and was confirmed in the position by the Tayy people. Part of his strength lay in the fact that a quarter of any amount they obtained as booty from raiding expeditions had to be given to him.

When the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam announced openly his call to guidance and truth and Arabs from one region after another accepted his teachings, Adiyy saw in his mission a threat to his position and leadership. Although he did not know the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam personally, and had never seen him, he developed strong feelings of enmity towards him. He remained antagonistic to Islam for close upon twenty years until at last Allah opened his heart to the religion of truth and guidance. read more

RECIPE

CHOCOLATE CREAM AND MINT SWISS ROLL
(Makes 1 large cake)

Ingredients:
4 extra large eggs, separated. 125 ml castor sugar (105 g). 60 ml Snowflake self-raising flour (35 g). 60 ml cocoa powder (25 g). Castor sugar for rolling.

Method:
Beat egg yolks and castor sugar until light and pale. Sift flour and cocoa powder and add to egg mixture, beating well. Beat egg whites until soft-peak stage and fold in with a metal spoon. Spread in a lined and greased 23 cm x 32 cm Swiss roll tin. Bake in a preheated oven at 180 °C for 10 12 minutes. Remove from oven and leave to cool slightly. Turn out onto a clean, dry tea towel sprinkled well with castor sugar. Trim edges to ensure rolling without breaking. Remove paper carefully and roll it up with the sugared cloth. Leave it for about 5 minutes, then unroll and leave it to cool further.

For filling
Beat cream and sugar until thickened. Spread over the Swiss roll and sprinkle peppermint crisp over it. Roll up.

THE SMILE

POST TORTOISE POLITICIAN

While stitching a cut on the hand of a 75-year-old farmer, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man.

Eventually the topic got around to politicians and their role as our leaders.

The old farmer said, "Well, as I see it, most politicians are 'Post Tortoises'."

Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a 'post tortoise' was.

The old farmer said, "When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a tortoise balanced on top, that's a post tortoise."

The old farmer saw the puzzled look on the doctor's face so he continued to explain.

"You know he didn't get up there by himself, he doesn't belong up there, he doesn't know what to do while he's up there, he's elevated beyond his ability to function, and you just wonder what kind of idiot put him up there to begin with."
