Abu Sufyaan, Sakhr bin Harb bin Umayyah bin Abd Shams bin Abd Manaaf was a Sahaabah (companion) who had been of the nobility of the Quraysh in pre-Islam. He was the father of Mu'aawiyah, the progenitor of the Al-Ummawiyah state. At the onset of Islam, he was one of the leaders of the polytheists who fought against Islam and the Muslims. According to bankers and economists in Muslim countries, Ramadan almost always ushers in a month-long period of inflation as people drastically increase the amount of money spent on clothing and food. The prices of certain staples go up dramatically – according to a former Monitor correspondent in Cairo, during Ramadan a cup of tea can cost six times its normal price. However, economic productivity also declines because of the shorter working hours and the general malaise among those abstaining from food and water all day.

Ironically, many people gain weight during Ramadan. They are more sedentary during the daytime, eat richer food than normal at the fast-breaking iftar meal in the evenings, and get the majority of their daily calories at night, shortly before they go to sleep.

SAVOURY SCONES

Ingredients:
2 cups self rising flour
1 tsp baking powder
2 tsp castor sugar
Pinch of salt
¼ cup butter/margarine
¼ cup cheddar cheese
3 Tbsp parsley
½ cup onion
½ cup tomato
¼ cup green pepper
1 egg
4/5 cup milk or fresh cream or orley whip dessert cream

Method:
Sieve self rising flour, baking powder, sugar and salt together. Rub in butter or margarine to resemble crumbs. Add grated cheese and vegetables and mix well. Beat egg and milk together and add dry ingredients to make a soft dough. Place spoonfuls of mixture onto a greased baking tray or in muffin pan. Brush with beaten egg. Bake at 180 C for +- 15 minutes until golden brown.

SMALL TOWN JUSTICE

Two small county judges both got arrested for speeding on the same day. Rather than call the state Supreme Court for a visiting judge, each agreed to hear the other's case.

The first judge took the bench while the second stood at the defendant's table and admitted his guilt. The sentencing judge immediately suspended both the fine and costs.

They switched places. The second judge admitted that he was speeding, too. Thereupon the first judge immediately fined him $250 and ordered him to pay court costs.

The second judge was furious. "I suspended your fine and costs, but you threw the book at me!" he fumed.

The first judge looked at him and replied, "This is the second such case we've had in here today. Someone has to get tough about all this speeding!"
