THE LONELY AND FORGOTTEN – OUR ELDERS

By Annisa Essack

More than a third of the world’s adult population over the age of 45 are lonely. People who find themselves physically isolated or have small social networks are more likely to feel lonely.

Loneliness and social isolation are growing public-health concerns, especially to seniors. Studies have connected loneliness to a range of health issues that threaten well-being including a higher risk of heart attacks, strokes, depression, anxiety and early death.

With the fast-paced world we live in, loneliness has the most effect on the aged and studies have shown that chronic loneliness plays a major impact on older adults’ memory, physical well-being, mental health and life expectancy.

Resolving the problem of loneliness among seniors is not a simple solution of moving them in with their children or even getting them together with others. In fact, research has shown that seniors living with their children were more likely to feel a lack of companionship than those who didn’t. read more

QURAAN KHATAM WHATSAPP GROUPS

Question: The ladies in our community have a Quraan Khatam WhatsApp Group. There are 30 participants on the group. Every month each member is given a Juz (portion) to read. At the end of the month, once members have indicated that they have recited their portions, Dua is made and the rewards are sent to the Marhoomeen. Is this practice acceptable?

Answer: It will be permissible to join a Quraan Khatam WhatsApp Group if one feels that by being part of the group it will serve as an encouragement to recite the Noble Quraan.

It should be kept in mind that it was not a common practice during the time of the Sahaba Radiyallahu Anhum for individuals to select Ajzaa (portions) and collectively make a Khatam of the Noble Quraan. Hence, this should not be considered as a Sunnah practice.

Be that as it may, it will be more virtuous and rewarding for a person to read his/her own Khatam of the Quraan instead of being part of a group.

It should also be noted that it is not permissible for Non Mahram males and females to be together on a Quraan Khatam group.

THE SMILE

An Engineer was unemployed for a long time. He could not find a job so he opened a medical clinic and puts a sign up outside: "Get your treatment for £500, if not treated get back £1,000."

One Doctor thinks this is a good opportunity to earn £1,000 and goes to his clinic. Doctor: "I have lost taste in my mouth." Engineer: "Nurse, please bring medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in the patient's mouth."

Doctor: "This is Gasoline!" Engineer: "Congratulations! You've got your taste back. That will be £500."

The Doctor gets annoyed and goes back after a couple of days later to recover his money. Doctor: "I have lost my memory, I cannot remember anything."

Engineer: "Nurse, please bring medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in the patient's mouth." Doctor: "But that is Gasoline!" Engineer: "Congratulations! You've got your memory back. That will be £500."

The Doctor leaves angrily and comes back after several more days. Doctor: "My eyesight has become weak."
Engineer: "Well, I don't have any medicine for this. Take this £1,000."
Doctor: "But this is £500..."

Engineer: "Congratulations! You got your vision back! That will be £500."
