Hasan Al-Basri RA

Al-Hasan ibn Abi 'l Hasan al-Basri was born at Medina in 21 (642), the son of a servant Maisan who afterwards became a client of the Prophet Mohammad Sallallahu Alyhi Wa Sallam's secretary Zaid ibn Thabet RA.

Brought up in Basra, he met many Companions of the Prophet Sallallahu Alyhi Wa Sallam including, it is said, seventy of those who fought at the Battle of Badr. He grew up to become one of the most prominent figures of his generation, being famous for his uncompromising piety and outspoken condemnation of worldliness in high places.

Whilst the Mo'tazelite theologians claim him as the founder of their movement (and 'Amr ibn 'Obaid and Wasel ibn 'Ata' are counted amongst his pupils), in Sufi hagiography he is revered as one of the greatest saints of early Islam. He died at Basra in 110 (728). Many of his speeches - he was a brilliant orator - and sayings are quoted by Arab authors and not a few of his letters have been preserved.

1 bunch spinach washed and cleaned.
Neatly slice out the middle vein, leaving the leaf whole
½ kg cooked chicken filling of choice
1 egg whisked with salt and fine red chillies

Lay all spinach leaves flat. Brush with egg mixture. Place 1 tblsp or more of chicken filling on each leaf, depending on the size of the leaf. Roll each leaf closed like a spring roll, making sure all the sides are closed. At the end pierce it close with a clove. Place all spinach rolls in a pot and steam on low for 15 to 20 minutes until the colour of the leaves change. Lightly brush both sides with olive oil and fry for just a minute on each side. Serve hot with puri and chutney.

At my granddaughter's wedding, the announcer polled the guests to see who had been married longest. It turned out to be my husband and I. The announcer asked us, "What advice would you give to the newly-married couple?"

I said, "The three most important words in a marriage are, 'You're probably right.'"

Everyone then looked at my husband. He said, "She's probably right."
